William Miller proprietor of a south town boarding-house and his wife were arrested after Miller confessed to arson attempts. He had insured furniture for 1000 dollars and saturated carpets with kerosene before lights-out. Police recovered incriminating documents. the wife is charged as an accomplice as neighbors ponder a near disaster.
Judge John C. Newmyer of the western district of Pennsylvania became delirious on a western express from Jersey City to Pittsburgh. He drew a revolver and threatened a Presbyterian minister, was overpowered at Harrisburg, and sent to Pittsburgh. His condition is dangerous, linked to erysipelas after foot surgery. No truth to rumors about his wife. Mrs. Newmyer remains at home nearby.
A short stout man robbed the Guilford depot ticket office after alighting from a 7:30 New York train. He demanded all cash, obtained $75, fled in a hired team, and was later captured in East Haven by Deputy Sheriff Carney. He refused to identify himself.
Census notes a multi generation household near Warrensburg six miles north. A child three months old lives with mother Mrs Fred Chandler age under 15, grandmother Mrs John Allen age 33, and great-grandmother Mrs Oscar Greene age 54.
Jersey City March 7 Gustave Wustinger and Gustave Kuhn two cooks aboard the Lahn were arrested on landing ten jewelry packages found on their persons and in their ship quarters. The haul includes chains bracelets and rings valued at about 10000 dollars.
Representative Washington of Tennessee testified before the house riv ers and harbors committee asking for liberal funds to continue Cumberland river improvement in Kentucky and Tennessee through the existing locks and dams system already begun.
New York March 7. Before the Plymouth church Brooklyn sermon Darwin J Messerole who killed Theodore Lartlig was admitted Q8 probationary member.
The Woodbridge gun under construction at Watertown arsenal aims to fire a quarter ton projectile twelve to fifteen miles. It is a 716 foot long steel tube with 11 1/2 inch diameter, later bored to 12 1/4 inches. A wire-wrapped stave design, using miles of steel wire at high tension, reinforces the tube with a special winding machine.
A couple at 518 Fall Street were found dead after a pistol suicide pact. The wife appeared to lie on the bed as the husband placed the pistol in her mouth and then used the same weapon on himself. Despondency from long illness is blamed, with theories about the wife’s devotion or shared despair.
Philip Hart, his wife and two daughters narrowly escaped a blaze that consumed the first floor saloon and threatened the sleeping second floor. Mrs Hart awoke choking on smoke at about 2 50 am and alarms spread quickly as a bucket brigade battled flames, saving the family from death.
A Santa Fe and St. Joseph passenger train between St Joseph and Topeka had a smoker heating apparatus explode at Meriden. Almon Richards and Alexander Erickson, both of Topeka, died from injuries. Five others were hurt but expected to survive. The car was wrecked and injured were taken to Santa Fe dispensary.
Washington Indiana March 8 experts reported ex-auditor James C. Lavelle fraudulently embezzled about $18 463.38 mainly through overdrawn salaries misappropriated school funds and liquor license receipts. The investigation shows his mother repaid $2 650 and records show a fire set by Ledger Wood and Harbin who confessed and are serving a seventeen year term. Lavelle now works as an agent for Aurora Brewing Co. while awaiting further legal action.
Blaine, secretary of state, is reported to be gravely ill with a severe cold and bronchial inflammation. Doctors say the condition is not alarming, though his temperature has been high and he has not slept for five nights. He will remain home for several days and will not attend today’s cabinet meeting.
A man endangered citizens by drawing a revolver and threatening to shoot. The incident led to a public alarm and the trial is scheduled for April 4. Police and witnesses provided details of the event and the accused faces formal proceedings.
Washington March 8 Representative Kendall died at 9 25 Monday evening from an apopleptic stroke. His body will be interred at his West Liberty home Kentucky. He served one term, was popular with Democrats, a hard worker right to his constituents. Born Morgan County Kentucky he was a Confederate army officer and a longtime public lawyer. Kendall left a wife and family as flags hung over the Capitol.
A morning paper reports a syndicate headed by J C Shaffer has 30 days option on Citizens Railway Co of Indianapolis for 750000 dollars. S W Allerton, a major shareholder, denied the option but Shaffer’s comments suggested it may be secured. Shaffer’s Chicago trip was linked to pursuing such an option.
Washington March 8 The Senate referred a bill by Mr Sawyer to authorize a postal telegraph service The postmaster general may contract with any telegraph owner for transmitting correspondence press dispatches and postal money orders at agreed rates not to exceed current charges

The contractor had entrusted the building to owner William Dockery of Cleveland, who suffered a $4,000 uninsured loss.
London reports via Valparaiso dispatch that a new Chilean cabinet may be formed and that Senores Matte and Altamirano are expected to hold portfolios in the new ministry.

In Hawesville Kentucky on March 8 a nude newborn girl baby with a crushed skull was discovered on the Ohio river bank eight miles below town. The body floated some distance and had been in the water for two or three days.
Theodore Heirtz a laborer shot and killed his wife after a separation of one week and then shot himself at the railroad depot. She ran into the yard and fell dead before Heirtz ended his life.
CampEN Ark March 8 Col J T Chidester known nationwide as the original overland mail carrier died at his home after a long life and service. He carried government mail contracts across much of the southern states before and after the war.
ABINGDON, Va March 8 The trial of Dr. Baker charged with murder by poison concluded with a verdict of guilty.
