President McKinley takes the oath for a second term in Washington amid grand ceremonies. Vice President Roosevelt becomes president, with parade, speeches, and reflections on Cuba, the Philippines, and future U.S. duties abroad.
Vice President Roosevelt extolled the Senate as a high seat of free government. He emphasized that representative bodies hold a unique duty to preserve liberty, especially in nations shaping world destinies, calling lawmakers fearless, honest, and unselish in service.
Twenty one fishermen were swept onto floating ice off Silver Creek New York on Sunday afternoon. Seventeen were rescued, four likely perished as a high wind widened the open water. Rescue parties, aided by a special train and a fin car boat, worked through the day. The last four were last seen on the ice four miles out with a mile of open water to shore.
Akron March 4. All coal interests in the district to be consolidated. James Ty Loomis, president of Loomis Moss Coal Co Monarch Co and Akron Coal Co, returned from New York where he attended a meeting of sale operators and confirms the plan to unite major firms under a single combine.
A March 5 accident at the Engleside site mine in Center Valley eight miles east of Joplin Missouri killed five workers and seriously injured two others. Seven men were drifting from the main shaft when an unexploded shot blew a powder box, throwing a surface worker 50 feet.
Two thousand members of the United Irish societies attended the Robert Emmet celebration at Central Music Hall in Chicago on Monday night. The gathering heard condemnation of Queen Victoria and praise for the Irish martyr Robert Emmet.
New York March 5 The New York university council authorized the university senate to prepare a programme for the formal opening of the hall of fame on May 30.
The International Traction Co s Cold Springs machine shops in Buffalo were destroyed Monday night with all electrical machinery for repairing motors. Loss estimated at $50,000, covered by insurance.
Savannah Georgia March 5 Tom Corcoran of Savannah defeated Dick Kane of Chicago in the eleventh round of a previously scheduled ten round bout. The bout ended abruptly when Corcoran landed a decisive combination forcing the referee to stop the fight.
John J. Seannell refused to permit The Abbott champion trotter of the world to enter sweepstake races this season. He offered no entry for Boralma in a $40,000 four horse contest with Grogsceus Charley Herr and The Abbott. The Abbott would trott for any amount after July 25 on the best track of the Grand Circuit.
Gen. Fitzhugh Lee, commander of the Missouri department, was honored with a Commercial Club reception in Omaha on March 5. He thanked locals for hospitality, said his brief stay had been happy, and hinted at returning to Virginia or joining his family in Arizona for the winter.

Fort Worth March 5 Five children of Samuel Vinyard near Comanche were burned to death when a house burned while the parents were away. Ages ranged from 1 to 6 years.
Gov. McCallum received a cablegram from Mr. Chamberlain stating the admiralty will commission the third class cruiser Calypso as a drill ship and station her in Pracentia Bay at St Johns Newfoundland.
The British steamer Antillian under Capt. Fost, used as a transport for bubonic plague cases, left Table Bay February 7 and Albany February 24, arriving at Sydney on Monday.
Cheyenne March 5 The bodies of all miners who perished in the Diamondville mine fire have been recovered with the twenty eighth and last taken out Monday The fire is out and mining operations will soon be resumed.
In Chicago on March 5 Charles Morrill of Morrill & Co. tea merchants was wounded by John Correa a bookkeeper who then killed himself after the men quarreled over the firm’s books.
