In Decatur County near the Tennessee River a wagon group led by Bud Hynes sank into a swamp after dark. A colored driver refused to cross a stream. Hynes took the reins and the team entered ten feet of water. The father, mother, and seven children perished, leaving nine in the family drowned.
Washington dispatch lists the cabinet with Secretary of State Blaine, Treasury Windom, Interior Noble, War Proctor, Navy Tracy, Postmaster Wanamaker, and Attorney General Miller. Agriculture vacancy noted.

New York March 2 Edison the inventor has suffered a bad eye injury after a pot of boiling chemicals spilled on a stove and splashed into his eyes. The incident occurred as he worked, causing injuries that require medical attention and observation.
Charleston reports a surge of Black migration from South and North Carolina and Virginia, with most heading to Kansas Arkansas and Texas amid the exodus from the region.
BERLIN March 2 The Post states the Emperor will visit England at the end of August. The report places the royal tour as a major international event with planned attendance and formal arrangements.
In Richmond, W A Thomas left a quarter million in property to his child by a colored woman. His cousins dispute the claim and the matter is in court under curators. New York physician Dr. W E Forest warned at a March meeting of the Academy of Medicine that the 1878 yellow fever outbreak cost 25 000 lives and 200 000 000 dollars. Kiet March 4 reports a rumor of a battle in Samoan waters between an American man-of-war and the German corvette Olga with claims the American ship fired first. Loudon March 4 notes a truce between the German Consul and Mataafa to avert German estate destruction until after the Berlin conference.
A caravan of 150 men women and children passed through Chattanooga on the way to Utah under three Mormon elders. They claim promises of homes and work and intend to join the Mormon Church. Another group of about 100 is due tonight.
A three year old boy named David Speckler was abducted from in front of his mother's residence on State street at nine last night by two unknown men who boarded a passing cable car with the child and headed south. Police are in pursuit but have found no trace of the boy or his captors.
Judge St John overruled the motion for a new trial in John Sage declared guilty of first degree murder and sentenced him to life imprisonment. The case will be appealed.
Washington March 4 Sunday night session of the U S Senate saw Senator Riddie Berger of Virginia repeatedly interrupting the proceedings and the presiding officer ordered his arrest fealty to decorum.
