In Pawtucket a 700 strong militia mainly guarded central areas while rioting spread to suburbs and Central Falls after electric service restarted. Cars were halted as mobs pelted employees and damaged rolling stock. Marines and a machine gun were readied to quell the crowd.
New York members of the house appropriations committee were pressed to provide a $500,000 grant to cover the Buffalo exposition deficit. Representative Alexander of Buffalo claimed McKinley’s assassination dampened prospects and reduced expected returns as the exposition neared its close.
Capt Hampton Robbins of Port Morris New Jersey and Mrs Pluma Haines Camden New Jersey drowned when the sloop Henry S Robbins capsized off Chester in a hard wind. Miss Lizzie Jones Camden and Robert Reed and Chas Burton Port Morris rescued by the U S launch Cadet.
Tickets were sold openly for Thosvald Hansen’s hanged in Montreal for the murder of Erick Marotte, a 99 year old boy, last autumn to obtain 17 cents the boy jingled. Hansen’s neck was broken. Admission tickets ranged from 50 cents to $10.

SIXTH WEEK OF STRIKE peilkesbarre Pa June 17 The week of the anthracite coal mine strike began Monday with rain and quiet. Many idle workers stayed indoors and reports of assaults on mine and coal company policemen emerged but no serious injuries occurred. Bosses were said to largely stay at home. however some superintendents reported more work than last week. Activist leaders claimed progress and International Teamsters officials offered aid to striking miners. A revival rumor of a mass callout in Central Pennsylvania was dismissed by Patrick Gilroy who urged production curtailment as a likely tactic. Minute discussion noted some miners proposed reducing weekly work days to three to five to limit soft coal supply.
Panic at the Baes building near Locust street and Channing avenue as 300 girls and 100 men employed by Friedman Bros. shoe factory fled via fire escape and elevator. Elevator collapse and crowding caused minor injuries while the stable burned, five horses killed, and total losses estimated at $50,000.
Memphis June 17 Mrs Louis Wistrope wife of Brandywine planter in Mississippi acted while mentally deranged. She shot five children in the head with a Winchester rifle and burned the baby to death in the home you set afire after killing the others. She piled the bodies in the cotton house and fled as officers with bloodhounds seek her.
Roanoke Va June 17 A large group of about 500 strikers armed with rifles and revolvers moved from the West Virginia side toward North Fork and demanded non union workers quit. They seized Good Will and Simmons Creek mines and vowed to block any resumption of work by mine owners or employees.
Strong quake shocks struck Syracuse Sicily on Saturday night causing panic among inhabitants. No damage occurred though the tremors were felt amid recent overcast skies and extreme heat. Reports say further shocks were observed in other parts of Sicily.
In Charleston on June 17 the Kanawha fields see heightened strike activity. Winefrede mine, once the most active, is idle with no workers reporting for Monday. Three Kanawha and Hocking Co. mines accept concessions and resume work, while others are ordered closed. The company, operating north of the Kanawha river, sent empty cars to Ohio for active mines. Kanawha and Michigan railway shop workers go half time due to the strike. Four New River field mines remain active.
Ex president Grover Cleveland was awarded the degree of doctor of jurisprudence at the Augustinian college of St. Thomas in Villa Nova near Philadelphia. He is the first person in the United States to receive this degree. Also honored were Baron von Hensgervar, Austrian ambassador to the United States, and other recipients at the commencement ceremonies.
Chicago telegraphers, long without a union, were organized Sunday by the American Federation of Labor into the International Union of Commercial Telegraphers with aims to unite workers across the field.
In Columbus Ohio on June 17 Harry W Bragg a private in Company F 20th United States infantry shot and killed Mrs Lizzie Tibbits and then killed himself. The tragedy occurred on the grounds at the Columbus barracks driven by jealousy Bragg a Pelican Wisconsin native and former Philippines veteran had become infatuated with Tibbits who had come from Chicago to cook for Maj Augur of the 20th regiment. Her husband an enlisted man recently dishonorably discharged. Bragg quarreled with Tibbits Monday night over her going out with another man.
In Lexington near Mansfield Ohio a pet dog bit seven people including Effie Maxwell and her son Garnet. Residents report rabies symptoms and fear spreads as authorities plan to cull dogs after the dog also bit other animals. Mr Maxwell, Garnet, and Claude Dunshee left for Chicago for Pasteur Institute treatment.
In Orange township, Findlay Ohio, Enos Stiner detonated dynamite in a 12 foot well and was overcome by fumes. Dan Herr descended to help and also passed out, followed by John Ausberger. Rescues pulled them to safety after a six hour unconscious spell. all remain in danger.
In Cleveland on a Monday afternoon Miss Mabel Hanna daughter of the senator and Harry Parsons the senator's second secretary were married at the Lake avenue home. The ceremony took place in the east parlor before a miniature altar set before the grand fireplace.
Alliance Ohio June 17 The prolonged machinists strike at Morgan Engineering Co plant ends with a nine hour day and other concessions. All former employees to be reinstated within 12 days except one worker whose discharge sparked the strike.
June 17 Mason Ohio. The body of 12 year old Dean Richmond was recovered Monday morning from the river near Foster while his family photographed scenes along the water below Kings Mills. The incident occurred after Dean slipped into the water during a family outing.
Nearly a hundred boys and young men gathered at the United States recruiting station in Cincinnati on Monday morning to submit applications for positions in the Navy. The event marked the opening of recruiting locally with many hopefuls seeking service aboard naval ships.
A race conflict in Eldorado continues since May 29 when a mob attacked the Colored Normal and Industrial Institute. Colored homes have been stoned and residents warned to flee. several families have already left. A church parsonage was stoned Sunday night and white residents fear colored labor in nearby mines.

High winds toppled the Harris circus tent in Sigourney Iowa on Thursday injuring 25, with two in serious condition. Miss Clara Campbell, 20, sustained back injuries and may not recover.
Rome June 17 The pope, noting Cardinal Steinhuber is the lone cardinal truly opposed to the Taft mission, has signified to him a wish for a friendly settlement. The committee of cardinals is to meet Tuesday.

Two men Andrew Hileman and Kirk Bailey Jr. drowned at Crooked Run on Thursday while entangled in a fishing net. Dwight Bailey, father of Kirk, was nearly drowned and may die from the incident in Kittanning Pennsylvania on June 13.
