A Cairo dispatch reports Arabi Pasha received a Porte letter assigning him responsibility for keeping order and protecting European residents. He shared it with the consuls and pledged obedience, asserting he is secure with the Sultan and can prove his actions were authorized by documents in his possession.

Charles Seibard a New York cigar maker, jealous of his nineteen year old wife, shot her through a window twice at their boardinghouse then fired a third time as she moved to another room. The wife died within minutes. Seibard fled with the revolver still loaded.
