Stephen Brodie, a New York boot black and newsboy, leapt 120 feet from the Brooklyn Bridge in a dare tied to a $100 bet. He surfaced near Dover Street, was pulled into a skiff, arrested at Oak Street Station, and walked away uninjured amid cheering by onlookers.
The steamer Waesland arrived in New York after leaving Antwerp July 11. On the second day out it struck a sleeping whale about eighty feet long, which was cut in two and became stuck on the bows. The ship stopped to free the carcass, which drifted astern. officers noted it was an unusual but not unheard of incident.
Peter Shell, a young man from Pittsburg, rode a Pullman sleeper attached to the New York and Chicago limited express from Fort Wayne to Washington. He traveled after starting his journey by eager horses, paid a substantial fare, and described the limited’s few stops across roughly 320 miles between Pittsburg and Fort Wayne.
Dr. H. Kuhne of Camp Washington Cincinnati says he has eaten snakes for years and finds them good food. He praises rattlesnake over blacksnake for taste and uses oil of both in cooking. He notes it as a cure for croup and delirium tremens and reports bartenders use it for a claimed ailment called black and white cats.
In Cariaco on July 23 a young woman in a fashionable hat and gilt chain handed each of eight defendants a large bouquet after previous arrivals of flowers for the defendants. The scene occurred during the anarchists' trial with about fifteen minutes earlier other ladies had delivered flowers to the defendants.
An ice-cream supper at North Baptist Church in Eastport Maine left the minister and about forty attendees violently ill with cramps and vomiting. Doctors attribute the illness to a poisonous extract used in the serving process.
In Butte Montana on July 23 J W Moore formerly of Nevada shot clothing merchant Joseph Henderson with a double barreled gun and then shot himself. Moore claimed Henderson owed him 30000 dollars.
In New York on July 23, about two hundred Russian Jewish immigrants face possible repatriation as paupers. Castle Garden officials will not allow landing unless applicants prove ability to support themselves through honest work.
St Louis on July 23 reports District Assembly 101 of the Knights of Labor has expelled Martain Irons and it is expected he will be expelled from the order altogether.
In Wavasati Wisconsin on July 25 Br. G. Plummer a wealthy lumberman aged about fifty was found dead in his room after shooting himself. Investigators link heavy timber losses from recent fires as a possible motive for the tragedy.
Vienna reports six new cholera cases and four deaths in Trieste over the last day, while Fiume records three cases and one death. Authorities monitor spread and urge caution amid rising health concerns.
Burraro July 23 The city comptroller opened bids for 5159 silver trade dollars in the treasury. The entire amount was awarded to James Lb. Cogate & Co. of Wall Street New York at 75.04 cents each.
At about 8 30 this morning Chief Clerk Casper videhner of the County Commissioners office fatally shot himself in the left breast at his residence in Hazelwood a Hazelwood suburb near Pittsburgh. Governor and officials express shock while investigations begin.
Wilbur Ayers a provision dealer in South Norwalk Connecticut was locked inside a large patent meat refrigerator after the door slammed shut during dinner hour. Temperatures reached zero as he struggled and fought to escape tearing through the inner and outer planks. He crawled free and collapsed on the floor severely bruised and paralyzed in the right side and limbs, found by a customer.
Washington July 25 The Commissioner of Internal Revenue reports totals up to June 30 showing year total receipts of 116 902 845 up from 112 421 121 a rise of 4 481 724 The gains stem from 1 581 055 on oil sale 1 500 274 on tobacco 1 445 949 on fermented liquors Offset by 25 000 drop on banks and bankers and 20 554 in miscellaneous receipts
A boiler on Forty third Street and Packers' avenue exploded sending boiling contents over five men. Two others at thirty yards were injured by debris. Thomas Dolan died from his injuries and James Bailey is not expected to live. Building damage is estimated at $5,000.
Kate M. Pincin, a war widow from Lewiston, cashed a pension in Augusta and on the trip back from Gardiner to East Monmouth she encountered a robber who seized her horse. She fired a revolver, forced him to retreat, then rode home safely.
In Graves County Kentucky two Crittenden brothers under arrest for stabbing Alvin Wheeler tried to escape by knocking Constable Milton down. Milton shot and killed one brother and mortally wounded the other. The Crittenden brothers had attacked Wheeler as retaliation for alleged liquor sales without a license.
Oakland July 25 Miss Hattie Johnson of Brushy Fork was gathering blackberries when she disturbed a hornet nest. Enraged hornets stung her in many places causing severe swelling. Doctors say she cannot live.
Henry J. Sweeny of 113 Baxter Street New York twenty two was stopped from jumping from the Brooklyn Bridge tonight. The seventeen year old said his goal was to outdo Brodie and perhaps earn money when questioned by officers.
In Chicago on July 25 Mrs C R Jaynes reports a pickpocket forcibly took a hand satchel containing money and diamonds valued at 7000 dollars as she passed the Leland House under electric light. The thief remains at large.
New York July 25 Stephen Brodie the man who jumped from the Brooklyn bridge is out on bail and will be exhibited in a dime museum authorities report.
The drouth across the Northwest, reported from Caicaco on July 25, has severely harmed crops. Pastures are short and in many areas ruined, with Wisconsin ranches sending cattle to feed due to dried-up grazing grounds.
INDIANAPOLIS July 25 Charles H Brown and John Grimsley absconding township trustees have returned to Washington Davies County Ind and declare their intent to remain and face the music.
In Hutchinson Minnesota several people died after eating meat believed poisoned. A local butcher who sold the meat tested it by giving some to his two children who also died, prompting further investigation into the incident.

Washington July 26 It is not likely more public building bills will pass this session. Sixty bills remain on the calendar about thirty have been acted on during the session some vetoed some not yet passed by the Senate
