Pittsburgh July 16. Chairman Frick began operation of part of the Homestead mills using sixty non-union workers. Strikers patrols keep watch but are unaware the mill has partially reopened. Frick aims to have more departments running within twenty four hours after congressional committee adjournment.
The Amalgamated Association calls for national labor solidarity funding for Homestead iron and steel workers. A central labor federation committee will collect funds, urging unions to donate to W. Weihe of Pittsburgh and notify Homestead, Pa. contacts for delivery, to support widows, orphans, and unemployed workers.
A July 16 wind storm swept Hamilton Ohio striking the Louis Snider Sons Co pulp mill on North Second Street. Five workers were crushed when the west end of the brick building collapsed. two men, Henry Skillman and Arthur Bare, died likely from their injuries. three others were badly injured and two more were severely hurt.
Portstown July 1 Burgess McLuckie Homestead chief municipal officer slept in jail. Warrants for Hugh O Donnell John McLuckie Sylvester Critchton Anthony Flaherty Samuel Burke James Flannigan and Hugh Ross issued for murder in Connors and Wayne cases. McLuckie surrendered. others sought. Counter informations anticipated against Frick Lovejoy and Potter.
A statement from the agricultural department based on 1,100 agents reports says winter wheat and rye will average, corn below average, summer corn good, other summer crops above average, hay and fodder strong in the black earth region and fair elsewhere.
The Great Krasnoe-Selo camp near St. Petersburg reports an outbreak of black small-pox among troops. A cholera bulletin lists 195 new cases and 139 deaths across Russian districts on July 8 and 9, with Baku suffering 62 deaths. Astrakhan records 191 new cases and 32 deaths. Private Caucasus schools will close due to cholera.
News from Yokohama reports the schooner Undine of 180 tons, owned by Crawford & Co. of San Francisco, sailed for the South Seas under Capt. Castella with a crew of nine. A mate's brother joined, the captain was shot, the crew poisoned, and the steward bribed to silence. A new native crew was later brought aboard, and at Ascension Island the crime was revealed. authorities arrested the murderers and sent them to Manila.
Chicago dispatch reports Ralph E. Hoyt of California, a single taxer and former Republican, will back the Democratic ticket for tariff reform. The letter from Grover Cleveland dated July 14 in Buzzards Bay thanks Hoyt for his support and asserts the Democratic platform upholds honest tariff reform and will run on those lines.
Pittsburg Pa July 18 Early Saturday morning an explosion presumably of gas occurred in the tinware manufactory of Fleming Hamilton at 61 and 63 Third Avenue. The building and contents are completely destroyed The fire started on the third floor in the Japanning department Flames spread through the building within five minutes The building has burned three times in three months each time the work of an incendiary Loss Saturday morning's fire about 12004 and well insured.
In Sevier County on a Saturday, Thomas Reid shot and killed Robert Lewis over a cow trespass dispute. A double barreled shotgun wrecked Lewis' head. Reid is jailed in Sevierville amid talk of lynching. Lewis leaves a young family. Both men were farmers.
A U S marshal and troops arrest a striker as camp activity continues with searchers scouring the canyon. Few union men remain nearby and an exodus is under way via Glidden's Pass toward Thompson Falls. Armed bands are reported at points, but no outbreaks are described. Strikers are scattered around the Mullan mountains.
Sunday night three separate arson attempts rocked the Indiana reform department. Firemen battled smoke and flames as prisoners shouted let her burn, while guards and police contained the outbreak and maintained order for hours. Many girls were confined to halls and corridors as unrest lingered after a prior fire four months earlier.
Chicago July 18 Trades and Labor assemblies urged Illinois governor to arrest William Pinkerton of Chicago for murder and inciting riot and insurrection. They also called on New York Governor Flower to arrest Robert Pinkerton, and Pennsylvania Governor Pattison to arrest H C Frick of Homestead Pa on treason murder and related charges. A five person committee was appointed to draft charges against the Pinkertons and Frick. The resolution condemned efforts to form military groups within labor organizations.
About three hundred deaths from cholera have been registered by the Paris board of health. Dr Dujarotin calls the outbreak due to polluted Seine water and poor hygienic conditions. He predicts the epidemic may peak and not spread beyond St Denis, the most infected area, with other physicians agreeing on the Seine water and unhealthy living.
A Louisville junk firm hired H L Sanders and James Force to unload old shells from a war era arsenal. An explosion tore through their improvised work tent near Force's house, blasting shells, igniting others, and causing extensive destruction. Both men were mangled beyond recognition, with property damage widespread as bystanders watched.
York Pa July 18 Mrs Michael Clemens aged 32 found dead in woods near Pleasureville on her hands and knees her dress burning two bullet holes in her neck and head wounds. She had been gathering huckleberries and was missing when searched. A man’s flat hat and suspender piece were found nearby suggesting outrage and murder.
Mason City Iowa July 18 reports a severe shortage of binding twine across the state. Dealers lack sufficient supply as demand soars with an expected large harvest. Farmers hurry to buy remaining stock at about two cents per pound higher than last year, with several large concerns refusing orders due to scarcity.
The steamer Jim Wood collided with a natural gas main in the Ohio River near East Liverpool on July 18. The explosion killed the engineer on duty and one deck hand, with several others injured. Low river level broke the pipe, releasing gas which ignited from furnace fires.
In Lirrie Rock Arkansas on July 18 a mob of about 2000 gathered on a street corner to hang a figure of a man from a telephone pole bearing a Carnegie placard. Police uncovered the crowd and removed the effigy promptly.
London reports show cholera less contagious overall yet highly fatal. The outbreak strikes workers in T'sanitsin with extreme virulence, killing many within hours of onset while few individuals are affected relative to the population.
Franz Vetta known as the basso profundo died in Riverside California on Sunday at age. His real name Louis Neu Mayer. He succumbed to consumption.
A boiler explosion at N. A. Walker & Co. sewer pipe works in Walker's Station near Liverpool kills engineer Jas. Moneypenny and injures about a score of workers. Listed injured include John Hammond, James Dansick, William Gould, and William Costello among others.
David Lester of Company A Fourteenth Regiment N G P stabbed Frank Calhoun on Grant street near Fifth avenue at 9 30 Monday morning. The altercation stems from a night of carousal with Howard Hook as they continued drinking into Monday seeking insults and brandishing bayonets.
PirrspurcH Pa July 19 The Homestead steel works strike has indirectly caused the indefinite suspension of the Braddock wire works plant at Rankon Station. About six hundred men are out of work as mills nail rod barb wire and wire drawing departments close due to a shortage of steel billets to make wire rods and rails.
New York July 19 The board of walking delegates of builders ordered the men of fourteen firms to strike Monday morning. The action disrupts work for about one thousand men and could affect up to six thousand workers by week’s end.
Beaver Falls employees at Carnegie steel works did not report to work on Monday keeping the plant idle. Two regular watchmen are in charge and the site remains quiet as tensions persist.
