New Orleans July 5. In the Louisiana legislature the Smith bill has passed the senate and gone to the governor. It bars all histories in public schools that do not give complete credit to Adm. W. S. Schley for the victory at Santiago. Gov. Heard is expected to sign the bill.
Joe Nelson of Chicago defeated Tommy Hall of England in two straight five mile heats at the New Haven Coliseum board track. Motor paced races completed Friday night with times 8:19.35 for heat one and 8:09.35 for heat two.
In front of about 20 000 spectators G C Bennetts Aladdin captured the Sheridan stake at Washington Park. The winner defeated the American Derby victor Wyeth and the runner up Lucien Appleby in a tightly contested race.

Charleston July 7 Twenty Negroes were injured when the front veranda of Emanuel church collapsed during the funeral of a colored preacher. Several persons were carried from the scene with injuries as mourners gathered for the service.
Benton Harbor Michigan July 7 Two men were drowned here Sunday bringing to five the total deaths by drowning in the past 24 hours. Robert Wilson of Detroit drowned in the St Joseph river while attempting to swim. Ward Kiser 17 of South Bend Ind drowned after suffering heart failure while bathing in Lake Michigan.
A cloudburst at Ellisport near Hope Idaho washed out two miles of Northern Pacific track and swept away 12 to 15 houses. The surrounding country is flooded with swift creeks and multiple trestles destroyed. Passengers are ferried between Sand Point and Hope in both directions. slides reported along the line. No lives lost.

Manila reports Capt. John H. Sollenberger of the 10th Infantry killed himself at Iligen Mindanao on July 4. Despondency was given as the motive. Second Lieut. Thomas Ryan of the Philippine Scouts also died by self-inflicted wounds on Mindanao June 18.

In Offerman Georgia a severe thunder and lightning storm killed three white men and two Black workers and injured two more. The deceased white men were M. C. Hawkins F. B. Studer and A. H. Rymer, all from Alexander. The two Negro victims were unnamed. All were employed in the Southern Bell Telephone Co. construction department, stretching wires in two sections about five miles apart. A single lightning bolt caused all seven injuries and deaths.

Mrs. Margaret Kelly aged 65 wife of an employee of Whitelaw Reid at his summer residence near White Plains is dying from injuries after being struck with a stone wrapped in a handkerchief by two men who robbed the house. Two suspects are under arrest.
Sioux City July 8 a conference between Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha Railroad representatives and company craftsmen resolved to grant a 25 cent per day wage rise for boilermakers machinists and helpers.
Colorado Fuel and Iron Co at Pueblo announces a voluntary 10 cent daily wage increase for about 1,500 unskilled workers starting immediately. The raise was initiated by the company and applies to all unskilled labor at the Pueblo plant.
Chicago on July 8 reports LaRita, Goran Pears' 200-foot cabin yacht, won the third and final Lipton trophy race. LaRita swept the series with a 300 percent success.
Bloomington Illinois July 8 railroads are rushing section men into Chicago to take the places of striking freight handlers. The Chicago and Alton sent 50 mostly colored workers from Bloomington on a special train Monday night. More is being sent.
In Norfolk on July 8 William Mc Horney aged 12 lies dying at St Vincent's hospital from blood poisoning caused by burns on his legs after he rubbed gasoline on them and ignited to singe the hair.
Rev. George J. Johnson, aged 78, died in St. Louis on Monday after a 59 year career as a Baptist missionary. He served as district secretary for the American Baptist Publication Society for the entire west and later as missionary secretary for the United States, dedicating many years to traveling missions across the country.
John J. McGraw announced he signed with Andrew Freedman to manage the New York National league baseball club. A majority of Baltimore stockholders met Monday evening and agreed to release him.
In Pittsburgh at the Coliseum on Monday night Howard Freeman shattered the world 20 mile bicycle record with a time of 29 minutes 8 4 5 seconds, beating Harry Eikes who had held the record at 29 minutes 19 seconds.

In Richmond Virginia on July 8 John Crawford shot and killed two Cash brothers of Lowmoor near Clifton Forge. Crawford was arrested and said one Cash brother threatened to cut his throat.
