Duel Between Two Editors Near Waynesboro
The Richmond State editor Richard F Bierne dueled Richmond Whig editor W C Elam two miles south of Waynesboro on the morning of the 30th. Both fired two shots each at eight paces. Elam received a thigh wound but it was not serious. Weapons were Colt revolvers in thirty two caliber. Elam was taken to Lieutenant Goyer Lewis home twenty two miles away where the ball was extracted. Bierne was unharmed and returned to Richmond.
