Natural gas was struck near Cordova in Walker County about thirty miles west of BreMincHam. The gas pressure is sixty five pounds per square inch and was found at a depth of seven hundred feet on the Cordova Coal and Coke Company property. Experts say there is no doubt the gas exists in paying quantities.
The State Department reports official election results showing the prohibition amendment passed with 296,617 yes and 484,644 no, a majority against of 188,027, and the suffrage amendment abolishing the poll tax qualification defeated with 183,371 yes and 420,325 no, a majority against of 236,952.
Washington July 2 signers Count D Arco Valley German minister and Postmaster General Wanamaker sealed a money order convention raising maximum money order from fifty to one hundred dollars for transfers between Germany and the United States.
Washington reports heavy rainfall flooded the Treasury Building courtyard vault housing over eighty million silver dollars. Water totaled two inches, damaging boxes and bags though the silver itself remained uninjured.
A large cave near the Hermosa mining camp sixty miles from Las Cruces New Mexico has been opened revealing veins of almost pure silver lining its interior.
Charleston dispatch reports Detective Baldwin and aides trapping two moonshiners named Reed and Las temen in Mercer and McDowell Counties near Bramwell. A large quantity of whisky was seized with the arrests.
Lexington Virginia July 2 General F H Smith chief of the Virginia Military Institute since 1829 submitted his resignation to the Board of Visitors to take effect January next Governor Fitzhugh Lee is expected to name his successor and assume the role in the near future.
Carlisle D. Graham tested a twelve foot torpedo barrel lifeboat before planned July Fourth descent of Horseshoe Falls. The craft broke on rocks above the rapids, but the stunt allegedly saved the would-be travelers when the fragments drifted away. Local officials and witnesses reported the disaster and awaited recovery.
Campbell, a white man from Circleville, Ohio, who says he is Christ, was examined by a lunacy commission near McIntosh, Georgia. Ex congressman TI M Norwood led questioning as about 1,100 gathered. Campbell claimed miracles and offered to be killed to prove he could raise the dead. The jury ruled him insane. Numerous Ohio items followed, including lightning deaths, railway accidents, and local court actions.
On July 4, 1880 George Jamison confronts a mystery sparked by Miss Talkative who writes a note to test him. The note triggers Jamison’s jealousy and a kiss for Alice, who is to wed Frank Sharp. A mistaken anonymous letter sparks reconciliation and a wedding switch, ending with Jamison and Alice united while Sharp disappears.
Washington reports that the 7,500 and 5,300 ton cruiser designs are agreed on and drafting will start before inviting construction bids. Five ships have bids due August 23, including two 3,000 ton nineteen knot cruisers. Ocean tug bids open next month and a submerged monitor design will be advertised to ready Congress for possible navy legislation.
Rumor from the Navy Department says Commander Royal B. Bradford, current Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Navigation, will become Chief of the Bureau of Equipment and Recruiting, succeeding Captain Schley. The change is expected around August 1.
Charles R. Morris a tinner in the employ of A Silberberg was arrested by Detective Hedrick on suspicion of taking part in the May 23 Pacific Express robbery near Dallas Texas. He offers to return without a requisition and says he can prove his innocence.
The Treasury Department estimates a drop of about 15.5 million dollars in the public debt since June 1. This halves the year’s total debt reduction to about 88.182 million by June 30.
A Northwestern road locomotive crashed into a farmer’s wagon at Maywood near this city. August Multenhouer was killed instantly. Fred Liebenhouer, his brother in law, fatally injured. Hilda Radatz, eleven, seriously injured but may recover. Two other children suffered severe bruises.
In Albany on July 4 Mrs. Morris Reubens and her infant were found dead in bed. Authorities say the cause of death is a mystery and investigations are underway.
