Indianapolis reports circulated claim Moore may default around a million dollars to Connecticut Mutual Life as books are examined. In Scranton on January 28 a boiler at Harvey's silk mill exploded early, killing engineer Nicholas Chisel and injuring a worker named Anderson. The blast, caused by an exhausted water supply, destroyed much of the plant, with damages pegged at 5,000 dollars and 250 employees left idle.
Fire erupted in the Grand Opera House basement just before 2 a.m. and quickly grew out of control. The blaze, fought by the entire Duluth fire department, left the building a total loss by 3:30 a.m. Five stores and many tenants occupied the structure. Total losses reported at £200,000.

Philadelphia report states Mrs Hannah Burrows who stabbed her husband in August while in bed pleaded guilty and was sentenced today by Judge Hare to be hanged. The case noted she sought a passport and included a comic exchange about her age, with remarks by a clerk and bystander.
A Detroit Journal clipping relays a brief quarrel over trousers and a shabby trick. A speaker chides Jones for poor treatment while the other reveals the trousers failed to meet expectations, implying a line about cash and delivery.
Paris reports show General Boulanger winning a sweeping majority with 244,070 votes to Jacques 162,520 in the Seine department. Washington January 27 Republicans view the Mills bill with Senate substitute sent to Ways and Means as a sign of possible extra sessions. They say tariff legislation will not occur this Congress and believe a call to an extra session is the only path. McKinley shifts toward support, saying the reference vote makes an extra session more likely than in six weeks.
Reports from Samoa describe December violence as three days after the Mataafa clash. German sailors ransacked Apia homes, stabbed an American, and detained a Black sailor who claimed American status. Guards imposed shore restrictions afterward.
A Colorado earthquake rattled Routt County starting on the 15th with violent shocks at 4 pm. Large rock masses detached from mountains and frightened people and livestock. A sulfurous smell from Hot Springs accompanied a surge of water and gas, birds fell, and the quake moved from south to north.
New York on January 25 reports a romantic tale from Castle Garden about Anthon Sadowsky, a penniless nobleman who arrived aboard the steamship Bohemia and was detained for lack of funds. A $100 note, signed Cleopetra FF3 EOe, was presented today, and the story centers on a young couple with the girl’s father Samuel Flieigh, a wealthy Chicago citizen.
Baltimore on January 27. Dr Nathan Gorter seeks 25000 in fees for medical services to Robert Garrett during his world tour. Attorney John K Cowen for Mrs Garrett deposits 4000 plus 1000 as compensation. Court asked to grant judgment for the amount if suit continues.
In La Crosse Wisconsin on January 27 Robert Schen a shoemaker purchased smoked sausage. The whole family of seven including his wife and five children ate and fell gravely ill. Doctors treated them and some age members were saved though the younger may not recover. Schen had prior jail time for abusing his wife and the family was described as half starving. The incident will be investigated.
Indiana Secret Service officers arrested W W Boatright at Sullivan on a counterfeiting charge after catching him molding dollars. They seized dies tools and forty five fake coins. Boatright has prior prison time for a similar offense and will be brought to Indianapolis for trial.
In Dar-es-Salam an engagement on Friday left Arabs defeated with numerous casualties. During the battle the First Lieutenant of the German warship Sophie died of sunstroke, worsening the peril to captured missionaries.
An elderly Lima woman Misses died after a dog bite that caused blood poisoning. Mrs. John Miller, about eighty five, was severely bitten on the hand last week and succumbed today from complications linked to the wound.
Knoxville Tenn Jan 27 It has been discovered that Ben Proffit ex trustee of Cooke County is a defaulter from 410000 to 20000 Citizens whose names appear on his bond assert that they did not sign it and that their names are forged.
Delegate Harr of Marion County pushes a bill requiring operators to pay for all merchantable coal that passes a half inch screen. He says Union Labor bloc will block a U S Senator until the bill passes and predicts no nomination in the Democratic caucus. Dorr of Webster remains firm against Kenna in any vote.
The New York Historical Society purchased from Richmond Whig Publishing Company the files of the Richmond Whig and Richmond Enquirer from 1804 through 1888 for about 2500 dollars. The volumes cover the War of 1812 14 Mexican War and Civil War history. No such chance to secure a current history of the United States has occurred before.
A ghastly murder occurred in Jackson Michigan last night. Mrs Mary L Latimer a widow living with her son R Irving Latimer a druggist was shot twice in the head after retiring She crawled to the window but was killed before she could raise it Her body lay in a pool of blood this morning.
A Beil’s place saw mill boiler exploded about 2 30 yesterday afternoon six miles from Adelphi Ross County. George Deich John W Aldrega and James Deich were killed instantly. F E Starling was fatally injured. Cause believed to be cold water mixing with a hot boiler.
A large quantity of counterfeit silver dollars is circulating in Reading Pennsylvania and reportedly distributed to Norris Town Phoenixville Pottstown and other Schuylkill Valley points by a gang suspected to be from Philadelphia.
Boston January 25 The Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment heard testimony on a prohibitory amendment to the constitution. After the session the committee agreed to report to the Senate in favor of the amendments.
Fort Smith Arkansas January reports Hale Matedon the hangman has held his position seventeen years and during that time has launched sixty souls to a legal death.
Berlin Jan 25 A Rudolf family of six is reported suffocated by gas from a defective store in Nerossen Saxony authorities say the incident occurred today and the victims include all members of the household
Milan Township in Monroe County faces a spreading smallpox outbreak with authorities stating the disease has gotten beyond control. The state will provide financial aid to assist response and containment efforts.
In Saadani near Saadani, an English missionary named Brooks and sixteen of his followers were killed by coast tribes and Zanzibar natives on Saturday. The incident signals deep white hostility stirred by German actions in the region.

In Calera Alabama on January 24 Joe Bowman died after being shot by Deputy Sheriff James Handly while Bowman resisted arrest near Holcomb and Pratt’s saw mill about three miles from town. Handly surrendered to the sheriff following the incident. Bowman had been charged with wife beating.

In Thomasville Georgia on January 24 Governor of South Carolina honored a Georgia requisition for the arrest of G H Coxwell who carried Mayor Hopkins' dog across the state line. Coxwell is jailed here and the dog is returned to its owner.
