William Howard Taft civil governor of the Philippines arrived in Chicago from San Francisco. He planned to hurry to Washington but the death of his mother in law delayed his trip. Taft defended U S policy, denying concentration camps and noting native affection for American institutions and insurgents becoming trusted community members. He criticized sensationalists and said only a small opposition remained in the Ba tangas province. The Miners convention in Indianapolis re elected officers and set five scale districts for joint conferences with operators.

In Fort Smith Arkansas January 27 prisoners in the county jail tried to escape at noon on Sunday. One man Jesse Jones a Negro charged with forgery was killed in the fight and jailer N D Knapton was injured. Harry Folsom Samuel Blaine and Andy Rogers all charged with grand larceny escaped with bloodhounds on their trail.
Capt. Henry Goss aged 62 veteran of the Civil War and prominent Kansas City businessman died Sunday from complications of a carbuncle in Kansas City Missouri on January 27.
