Four miles east of Muncie Indiana the west bound Southern Western Limited on the Big Four struck a buggy at a road crossing in a deep cut, instantly killing Dr. A. B. Bradbury, a respected local physician. The buggy was torn to splinters and the horse killed. the crash left a gruesome scene as the train entered the city.
In Memphis an eighteen year old, Alice Q Mitchell, killed seventeen year old Freda Ward on a riverfront walk. Mitchell attacked with a razor after a brief pursuit, slashing Ward’s face and throat, then wounded Ward’s sister Jo Ward before escaping with a friend. Mitchell reportedly loved Ward, and jealousy or “slight affections” drove the crime. The incident occurred near the levee as crowds watched the river sunset. Ward family ties trace to Gold Dust Arkansas. Mitchell’s motive linked to a broken friendship and unrequited affection.
Washington dispatch reports that the cruiser Presidente Pinto is being fitted in a French Atlantic port for the Chilean government, alongside the Capitan Prat. The Pinto is said to be ready to sail with Canet rapid firing guns, signaling a potential tension in the Atlantic.
Santiago January 25 The Chilean government replies to the U S ultimatum stating it withdraws the offensive note by Senor Matta to Chilean ministers abroad and withdraws its request for the removal of United States Minister Egan It proposes arbitration by a neutral nation for the Baltimore sailors incident or, if declined, submission to the U S Supreme Court for decision
