Auckland dispatch reports German gunboat Eber arrived from Samoa after battles at Apia. Eber officers deny flags were torn down or American homes burned. Lord Salisbury pledges England will cooperate with the United States to stop German aggression in Samoa if treaties were violated. Berlin telegraph says Germany reached understanding with the United States on Samoa issues.
Charleston West Virginia January 21 In a late session Senator Robert St Carr was elected president with 16 votes: 9 Democrats and 7 Republicans. The Senate adjourned until tomorrow with no immediate plan to continue election proceedings and ballots pending indicate a scattered vote unlikely to yield a quick result.
On Friday Postmaster English received a letter signed Jack the Ripper threatening to murder several disreputable women. Police arrested F. R. Farrison on forgery and defrauding a boarding house keeper. Letters in the same handwriting were found on Harrison, linking him to the threat.
Washington Jan 21 Commissioner Stockslager of the General Land Office announced a large complete map of the United States offered to schools libraries and the public at 1 25 each with no carriage. The map measures about 5 1 4 by 6 1 4 feet and is backed with cloth, priced to reflect the Government net cost.
Fire discovered shortly after 7 30 this morning in the Grand Opera-house in St Paul. Originating in the gentleman's coat room during the night watchman’s absence the blaze reduced the building to a complete ruin by 9 20. The opera-house was valued at 209000 dollars and fully insured.
John McNeil shot his brother in law James Dollett Jr on his front step after midnight in Jan 21. McNeil says he mistook intruders for White Caps and did not see Dollett before firing. Dollett died instantly.
Senator Davis presented a petition signed by Hon P Cudmore and 274 Fairbault Minnesota citizens urging the U S government to pursue the purchase of the island of Cuba. Referred.
Lansing officials ordered flags at half mast on all public buildings to honor Lieutenant Governor McDonald who died in Saturday collision near Waters meet. No special election will be held to fill the vacancy.
Mechanicville Alabama January 31 The seventeen year old daughter of Joe Weeks colored forced four of her younger sisters to eat rat poison Two of the victims died and the others suffer terribly The girl admits the crime.
Baley Murphy, 60, of near Pidgin West Virginia, was struck by the Parkersburg accommodation this morning and killed instantly in CuarKsspure W Va. on January 21.
Knoxville police report that London George an amateur officer shot Willie Johnson a half witted man through the back as he tried to escape the wound is fatal officials confirm the shooting occurred today in Knoxville Tennessee with the victim dying from the injury
Col umbus Ohio January 21 Governor F ores Aker commuted the death sentence of Mrs Mary Garrett convicted of murdering her stepchildren to life imprisonment.
In Buruinetton Iowa yesterday a group of young men fired at a target. One bullet missed the mark and struck Frank Allen a respected resident, killing him.
The Home Journal suggests replacing the hard boot heel with an elastic rubber heel to prevent pavement damage and injuries. The pad would be inexpensive to maintain and would quiet footsteps while reducing winter bone breaks.
Evansville Indiana January 20 report of a fatal accident near Spottsville Kentucky as the drawbridge of the Louisville St. Louis and Texas railroad failed under heavy use. About forty workers were on the end rails when the draw opened to let a boat pass. The bridge collapsed, killing many instantly with others trapped in debris.
A fire at the Chicago St Paul Minne Omaha railroad offices at Fourth and Wakonta streets trapped workers on upper floors. Firefighters arrived within minutes, rescuing occupants by ropes and ladders. Two jumped to avoid flames. one boy was bruised, a telegraph operator suffered a fractured skull, and several others were injured. Total damage about $30,000 with $350,000 Home Insurance covering the property.

Frank Dickson, arrested at Luraya for wrecking a Chesapeake and Ohio train near Pittsburgh on October 26, was brought to Pittsburgh and jailed before daylight. Organized railroad mobs are expected to lynch him, and two military companies stand ready to repel them.
In Knoxville yesterday a colored woman named Rachael Henry was arrested on charges related to a baby roasting to death after neighbors reported smelling burning coals. In Knoxville on January 20, a passenger train on the East Tennessee road collided with a freight train at Rader's Station. Engineer Zeck Burson and Fireman Will Hiser, both from Knoxville, and Rufus Patty of Johnson City were killed, with several others slightly wounded.
Escanaba Michigan January 20 Willie Murch fifteen son of a prominent citizen and John Peterson disappear while skating far out on the lake. Authorities fear both are drowned as search efforts continue for the missing youths.
Indianapolis report states Marion Swofford collected $10 for Thomas Cochrane and his own wages, then was found unconscious in the street this morning. He was the victim of a sand-bagging robbery.

Dealers in woodenware have formed a trust with the Manufacturers' Association to crush a firm that won t join. clothespins and washboards are affected as prices are expected to rise. The boycotted firm will seek the grand jury s aid.

August Weaver and Catharine Miller were arrested in Baltimore on charges of conspiring to defraud the Government. A pension grant to Laura Weaver led to a $1,700 check sent to Baltimore, revealing Laura was dead for over a year and Miller had been impersonating her.
Frank Dickson, ex Wayne County resident, arrested in Roanoke Virginia on a charge connected to a passenger train wreck opposite Charleston West Virginia months ago in which the conductor and fireman perished. He will be brought to Charleston soon and claims an alibi.
The jury in the Ridenour murder trial deliberated one hour and found the defendant not guilty. Immediate cheers erupted from a large crowd as the judge discharged Ridenour, who had twice been convicted and sentenced to hang, prompting demonstrations of public relief.

Baltimore dispatch reports another clash between a police steamer and oyster pirates at the mouth of the Chester river Maryland. After a two hour battle the pirates were routed leaving no further details available.
Monticello Illinois January 17 Harrison Dawley was fatally bitten by a dog in Rochester and died in great agony from hydrophobia despite medical care.
An explosion of fire damp at Hyde colliery near Manchester today left seven bodies recovered and about one hundred workers still entombed. Rescue efforts continue as authorities assess the disaster and safety measures.
