Abram Hewitt former mayor of New York and long time Congress member died at 80. He had been ill with obstructive jaundice since January 8 and died at 6 oclock Sunday morning. Funeral services will be led by Bishop Potter at Calvary Church. Hewitt is survived by his wife and seven children.
Mazatlan reports 107 deaths from plague since January 1 with seven deaths on January 15 and many new cases. 106 wooden houses burned as coaches used by plague victims are to be burned. A young worker’s mother died at home, while relatives disappeared after inspectors seized the body. One sister later died and the other remained missing. The young man, not infected, has become insane.
President Mitchell of the United Mineworkers of America was welcomed at a torch light parade in Indianapolis. Mayor Bookwalter and leaders of organized labor spoke at Tomlinson hall as about 2,000 marchers praised the figures behind the anthracite coal settlement and urged a new labor capital relationship. He praised workers, warned about capital, and urged mutual obligations for a brighter national life.
Narcisso Gonzales editor of the Columbia State died after four days of suffering from sepsis caused by a large bowel injury at the site of his wound. Panama January 19 Lieut Mitchell a graduate of Annapolis and officer on the Colombian government gunboat Bogota died here Saturday night of yellow fever. Several Bogota officers left for the United States about two weeks ago but Mitchell was prevented by illness from joining them.
New York on January 19 reports the most powerful American gun, a 16 inch coast defense rifle, was successfully tested at the government proving ground at Sandy Hook. The weapon was fired three times in front of several hundred army officers and others.
Citizens of Birmingham have donated 50 car loads of coal to aid the poor in New York and Chicago facing a fuel famine. Mayor Drennan of Birmingham notified Mayors Low and Harrison of the gift.
Information from the bureau of navigation in Washington says the North Atlantic squadron will visit Pensacola Florida and likely stay through Mardi Gras festivities next month.

Jacob K. Upton chief clerk of the United States Life Saving Service died suddenly in Washington after a return from Atlantic City He was 58 years old and survived by a widow and three daughters.
A Missouri bill introduced in the legislature would make playing football a misdemeanor. State university, schools of mines, normals and agricultural colleges’ officers and boards could be fined or jailed for allowing students to play. Teachers and directors of public and high schools would face the same penalties.
New York January 20 The Duke of Manchester accepted service of a writ of attachment on 220 pieces of baggage after failing to pay 696 for three strings of pearls believed to cost about 35000. He explains he never received the pearls.
In Oakland on January 2, Mrs. Wm. Hanna, 78, killed her husband with a hammer and then cut her own throat with a butcher knife. A note says she feared he would die and leave her penniless, prompting the murder suicide.
Copenhagen reports United States Minister Swenson held his first official dinner of the year Monday evening honoring Crown Prince Frederick. Present were Premier Denitzer, other officials and members of the diplomatic corps.
A fire at the Standard Oil Co warehouse near Charleston's eastern waterfront on Monday night burned forty three barrels of oil and left three firemen badly injured.

Indianapolis Jan 20 The National Lime Manufacturers association formed with 30 members representing 500 clans, adopting a constitution and by laws and electing officers.
The Dominican government has paid the remaining 50000 to Minister Powell, ending the Sala claim. Sala, a French loan provider to late President Heraux, funded war munitions. After Heraux’s death the claim was contested, then pursued on behalf of Sala’s American wife in New York.
