In Buffalo on January 13 Henry Pearlstein, wife, and five children aged 1½ to 12 died when a two story building burned. Owner Joseph Supowski and brother in law Karl Stracki were arrested. Supowski held $9,000 insurance on the building and contents. The other family above a shoe store barely escaped as a lamp fell and an explosion blew out storefront glass.

In Marinette Wisconsin on January 13 Mrs Lena Christel aged seventy was found dead in her room after smoke was seen. The body was badly burned away from the bed where she lay ill and a struggle is evident. Her son Martin Christel is jailed awaiting investigation.
Copenhagen January 13. King Oscar and the government will present a bill to parliament allowing Iceland to form an independent ministry with headquarters at Reykjavik. Until now the Icelandic minister has resided in Copenhagen.
Hon Henry C Payne arrived in Washington from Wisconsin and will assume duties early this week replacing Charles Emory Smith as Postmaster General in the cabinet. He traveled from Milwaukee to take the position.

Hartshorne Jan 14. A fire in the new slope No 7 at Dow, a key Choctaw coal system tributary, trapped miners. By 8 pm four bodies were recovered. about ten more men remain underground. Relief sent from Hartshorne.
Evidence links the Frankfort Michigan crucifix found by builders to Pere Marquette the famed Indian missionary. The relic now rests with Ann Arbor Railroad Co after rust was removed revealing 1664 and M. and C. Quebec inscriptions. Marquette sailed for upper Michigan in 1668 and was buried at Frankfort.
Bay kinahwaumh, a well known Chippewa elder and one of the last early day warriors, died at White Earth on January 14 at age 70. He was a fervent advocate of education and remained actively interested in efforts to elevate his people.
