Bradford Penn January 4 The nitro glycerine factory of George Dana at Windfall near Bradford was blown up last night killing two men Charles Thompson and James Sinning. The explosion wrecked nearby trees and a house, with the factory scattered and bodies found in fragments. Thompson’s body was mutilated beyond recognition and about twenty pounds of Sinning’s body were recovered in pieces.
Dr Tauszky, famed insanity expert, shot his wife and himself in a temporary frenzy. He had quit a large practice to focus on the Jesse Hoyt will case after a quarrel with Morris Witzel on East Seventh street. He is independently rich and his friends have long doubted his mental stability.
Paris reports from Hansi say General Negrier defeated six thousand Chinese troops one day east of Chui. Details of the engagement are not provided. An attorney seeks special counsel work to prosecute such cases promising $40,000. The attorney general referred the matter to Solicitor Neal for opinion noting district attorneys handle suits and the comptroller might block payments. It is expected the Solicitor will not recommend hiring a special attorney against pawn-brokers and shylocks for using National.
Fragmentary report notes a January 23 departure from Independence Hall to a Pennsylvania Road station accompanied by pomp. A ceremonial guard and officers are mentioned as part of the preparations for the reception or escort of an official.
The Daily Commercial Bulletin estimates December fire losses at 11,000,000 and yearly losses at 112,900,000 for the United States and Canada. December saw 244 fires with losses of 10,000 or more, including 22 fires of 100,000 plus, totaling 3,150,000 and about 30 percent of monthly fire losses.
In Galveston on January 5 a man named N A Slith, out of funds, hid in a dry box to be sent to relatives in Atlanta. The box contained food and water and was left at the express office. He was found by a night watchman early this morning and given to police. He says friends would have paid the charges on arrival.
Maprio January 2 reports shocks felt again at Alhama leaving town in ruins and causing panic in Antequera and nearby areas. Shocks reached Granada Malaga Nerja and Algarrobo as inhabitants desert destroyed villages and sleep in railway carriages. A royal decree orders a national relief subscription with officials contributing one day’s pay, aiming to raise about $200,000, with Spanish diplomats abroad opening subscriptions.
Rome reports a few cholera cases at Gaeta while Paris notes several deaths from cholera on Noirmontress Island in the Atlantic off France. The brief dispatch reflects early 19th century disease outbreaks impacting coastal towns.
A dwarf named Frank Springer died in Van Wert Ohio at about twenty years old. He stood thirty one inches tall and once performed for Barnum’s circus under the stage name General Speck.
Detroit January 4 The city of Grand Rapids is half under water as the river rapids stand fifteen feet high and an ice gorge forms several miles below. Water rose about a foot an hour part of today flooding flouring mills gas works and electric plants leaving the city in darkness. People flee as damage cannot yet be estimated.
In Duluth Minnesota this afternoon a recently completed frame in a grain warehouse buckled under a loaded wheat car weighing six tons. The car and cargo crashed twenty six feet to the floor, shattering the car and breaking through the floor. Nine men were on the car. August Anderson was badly hurt, possibly fatally, another man dislocated shoulder and five others were bruised.
In the Magna Charta mine at Walkerville James Tippett and William Bray fell from the cage while ascending nearly six hundred feet. Tippett died instantly as the accident crushed him against timber. Bray was crushed in the fall and John Bray, the other occupant, arrived to find him suffocated in a death grip on the bar.
In New York on January 4 Jacob Statterstein and Ida Rosenstein wed recently and resided at Lawlor's Farms Westchester. During a skating trip Isaac Rosenstein saved his sister by grabbing her hair as the ice broke. Miss Crystal and Statterstein drowned in the accident.
Washington dispatch notes a time change on January 2 adjusting observation times by eight minutes twelve seconds to align with standard seventy fifth meridian time instead of Washington local time.
Representative Springer, chairman of the sub committee probing Marshal Wright, left Washington for Cincinnati to meet Van Alstyne and Stewart. The inquiry will begin Monday and run for two weeks in Cincinnati.
