Tarentum Pa January 3 A desperate arson attempt nearly destroyed the town. Fire started at Essler s livery stable spread to Rue Jones grocery Zimmer mans shoe store and Dr Volta residence causing total loss of nine thousand dollars with some insurance. A prior blaze two weeks earlier destroyed six or seven large buildings totaling over fifty thousand dollars.
In Galena Illinois on December 31 John F Munger a Platteville Wisconsin resident suffered heart stopping failure after aconite poisoning from soaking feet in hot water. Doctors saved him with brandy digitalis injections near the heart despite an undertaker preparing him for burial. Munger regained life and is now out of danger.
A New York family reports two children bitten by a rabid cat two years ago. The boy died two months ago with suspected poison from the bite, and the sister is gravely ill with hydrophobia. Doctors fear for her life while local hopes rise for Pasteur treatment if she survives.

Biton January 1. Andrew L. Mellen of Altimore is wanted by Boston officers over the Mellen Coolidge murder. He is reported hiding in Isin ico a small town about five miles from Monterey Mexico, working on Larga road. Extradition may face obstacles.
A blaze at the Southern Hotel at Carondelet and Kia streets in New Orleans destroyed the building this morning. Guests and staff escaped with their personal effects, though damage details are sketchy as investigators begin work.
Chicago dairyman and financier Chas H Curtis, a veteran resident and prominent businessman, was found drowned in the lake this morning.
