In Fostoria Ohio on February 17 a blast at the Fox Magazine Cane Co plant, run by Robert L Short, killed five girls and three men and injured three other men. The factory, which mixed chemicals for cap production, was destroyed and all workers reportedly trapped as flames overtook the four-exit building. Short, burned and cut, acted to douse the chemicals before the explosion.
Washington reports the president nominated George B Cortelyou of New York to be secretary of commerce and labor. Cortelyou, secretary to the president since 1900, was confirmed after a smooth Senate process with no opposition and a favorable committee report.
The Philippines currency bill, passed by the Senate, designates the gold peso of 129-10ths grains as the unit of value once circulation reaches 5,000,000 silver pesos. It allows US dollar legal tender, authorizes large silver coinage, and enables silver certificates to maintain parity. The act repeals prior money acts and sets conference timing.
Susan B Anthony marked her 83rd birthday at her Rochester home on February 15. Dr Anna Howard Shaw assisted and visitors called throughout the day. About 200 in cash gifts will go to the New Hampshire woman suffrage campaign fund per Miss Anthony’s prior wish. Congratulations poured in from around the world. Three colored women’s stage clubs presented a pin. She remains in excellent health.
Representative Guy Stapleton of Butte introduced a resolution in the Montana legislature asking for a 3000 appropriation to aid triplets born to Mr and Mrs Stephen Murphy of Butte. The measure aims to honor such patriotic industry and counter the claim that nothing can be raised in Butte.
Havana Feb 17 President Palma and United States Minister Squiers signed a treaty granting the United States naval stations at Guantanamo and Bahia Honda. The accord states every request of the American government has been granted.

In Byannis Nebraska on Monday Prof Hill high school principal shot and seriously injured Henry Beem a pupil. He was later beaten during a fight with Beem and two companions.

Cairo Illinois February 17 S S Glasscock a farmer faced a blizzard in his shirt sleeves for over an hour to save 100 passengers on the Cleveland Cincinnati Chicago and St Louis line. He flagged the south bound train near Harr isburg with a red canvas coat as signal while freezing in zero weather. Passengers thanked him and bought presents after he was carried into cars.
