Washington D D H February 12 T F Brown a well known druggist was arrested on charges of unlawfully selling liquor. Chief Smith vows vigorous prosecutions to halt the internal traffic, aided by a quart whisky bottle found in the prisoner’s pocket labeled with a drugstore and physician’s marks. Local temperance forces react with shock.
Toledo observes the death of Judge Lewis H. Pike at age 80 after a long career in law. Pike served as a common pleas judge and was a prominent member of the Toledo bar for fifty years. He died following a general breakdown.
In Chillicothe Missouri on February 12 Wesley West a farm laborer slit the throat of Hattie May Buskirk at the home of William Corcoran where she worked as a domestic and then killed himself with the same razor.
Levy Mendel a 58 year old tobacconist of Columbus was found dead in a chair in the lobby of the Great Southern hotel with his head resting on his breast as if asleep.
Columbus Feb 10 A cross arm broke on a 20 foot pole and electrician Whitie Davis, known locally, was hurled to death while adjusting geometries for the Columbus Railway and Light Company.
Columbus February 10 The board of pardons granted parole to George M Collier chief examiner of stationary engineers under Coy Nash who left with about 2800 in receipts from his office leaving the penitentiary after a theft case pending finals.
In Columbus on February 9, the Freiner two-cent bill passed the senate on its second reading after the rules were suspended. Governor Pattison signed it, making it law with a 30 day delay before effect. The act sets two cents as the maximum passenger rate on Ohio railroads for distances over five miles, with only one dissenting vote.
Dr. S. Smith Gould collapsed in the turnkey’s office at Central police station after being booked on a charge of suspicion for pocket picking. Suspicions arose from complaints by women on the public square. It is believed the arrest shock caused heart failure. Letters on Gould indicated financial reverses and possible intent of self harm.
Washington D H O Feb 12. During her routine milking on Sunday morning Mrs Henry Windle 73, said to be the wealthiest woman in Fayette county, collapsed and died from heart disease. She had recently completed a $27 000 mausoleum in the local cemetery for her late husband.
Columbus Ohio February reports the Women s Christian Temperance Union chapters object to Ohio s congressional gift to Alice Roosevelt. The plan to present a punch bowl, later a loving cup, sparks indignation among the W C T U members who view the items as punch bowl symbols.
In Zanesville Ohio on February 12 a local note reports William Gadd of Adams Mills cured of hiccups after taking two tea spoonfuls of vinegar with one tea spoonful of sugar. He had suffered hiccoughs for a week and then returned home.
Toledo officials report 32 children and six teachers at Lagrange school fell ill due to unsanitary conditions. Director McKisson says the board has known of the problem for some time.
Zanesville Ohio February 10 Wm Gadd of Adams Mills was brought to town for treatment of hiccoughs that have troubled him since Sunday. Physicians have been baffled and despair of cure at present.
Columbus Ohio February 9 Gov Pattison will issue a proclamation urging Ohio mayors to enforce the Sunday laws. The governor is said to be drafting the document and aims to have it ready in a few days.
The Wehrle mansion at Middle Bass, famed along Lake Erie, was razed by a fire caused by a gasoline stove explosion. The substantial home, valued at about $20,000, was the shiniest on the lakeshore.
Toledo on February 12 reports Henry Wache son of Rev William Wache drowned while skating off Riverside park. He backed away to dodge a fellow skater and plunged into open water near the riverbank.
Lima February 10 grand jury indicted John H. Klatte a prominent Allen county attorney and noted politician on embezzlement charges. His client Mrs Matilda Dresser is named as his victim in the impropriety case.
The grand jury has indicted Frankie McHugh Floyd Clarke and Kid Baxter for highway robbery. They allegedly enticed W A Watkins into Wallasley and relieved him of 1500 dollars.
