Newport Ky February 8 The first drowning since the flood occurs at 1 o clock this morning William Bucert a well known bugler at the Barracks tries to reach the second story from a skiff forces the boatman to jump and falls away His boat was about four feet deep and he is believed to have drowned after sounding his last bugle from the hill at the Barracks last night while pleasure parties gathered nearby.
The Ohio River at Cincinnati reached 63 feet 3 inches at 3 PM and is rising about one inch per hour. At Pittsburgh the river is falling, and at Wheeling it is also dropping. The river continues to rise at Zanesville.
Princeton New Jersey February 8 Swiss naturalist Arnold Guyotdblar professor of geography and senior professor at Princeton College died. He was seventy years old and had been connected with the college for thirty years.
In Wheeling West Virginia a flood floods a three mile city front, with 5,000 homeless and at least a dozen dead. Loss estimated at 1 million dollars, with riverside houses submerged ten to fifteen feet. Banks, hotels, and telegraph offices flooded. transport cut off. A Citizens Committee mobilizes aid as fires erupt in suburbs and full details remain unavailable.
Lawrenceburg Maryland sits cut off from rail, phone and telegraph as floods surround the city. A night of darkness ends with streets filled with water up to five miles wide and shops operating from upper floors while aids from Petersburg and Aurora bring food and supplies.
New York on February 8 reports Eddie Goodie, aged 36 with numerous aliases, jailed on charges of participating in the Luther M. Church robbery at the 11th Street Second Avenue elevated station on December 31. He is identified as the gang leader, linked to prior daring thefts including a $17,000 Silk case from a Custom-house truck in 1870, a 1874 robbery during which police were followed and an officer shot, a $10,000 bank messenger robbery in 1868, and the Planet Mills messenger robbery in Brooklyn. With his retirement the post of General of the Army ends unless Congress elevates General Sheridan. Sherman will command as Lieutenant General.
Omana Nebraska February 8 report from conductor Phinney of an Eastbound freight states a man was found hanged at Whistling Post one and a half miles east of Bassett in Brown County this morning. The man is believed to be Kid Wade a noted horse thief. Wade was taken from vigilantes last night by a sheriff who planned to take the train to O'Neil but Wade was seized again from the sheriff and lynched.
Halderman, the United States Minister to Siam, reports that the State Department of His Majesty the King of Siam has issued orders for the purchase of American arms and the employment of American officers to drill the land forces.
London reports the Times notes good ground for France and England negotiating joint action against El Mahdi. Ferry, the French Premier, reportedly approves, but Germany may object. Elsewhere, excitement over Egyptian affairs grows as Woolwich and Portsmouth prepare munitions and marines for shipment to Egypt.
Three thousand shipbuilders in Belfast Ireland walk out in a major labor action affecting shipping and related industries. The strike reflects mounting tensions between workers and employers over wages and conditions, with unions rallying for a quick settlement.
