President Gilbert of Gilbert Starch Works and Secretary Work of Sleeper Starch Works report from Des Moines that a syndicate backed by English capital has bought both factories. Gilbert sold for 500000 dollars and Sleeper for 120000 dollars, giving the syndicate control of nearly all major starch plants in the United States aside from one remaining.
In Birming ham at Coalburg Mines a deadly quarrel ended with William Cummings killed by John Davenport. Davenport used a coal pick, stabbing Cummings three times and causing instant death. The dispute centered on Davenport's wife.
The Massachusetts Humane Society awarded Captain Norman H. Farquhar of the US ship Trenton a gold medal for extraordinary bravery in rescuing 140 officers and crew of the Vandalia at Apia in Samoa on March 16, 1889.

Washington Feb 11 The Senate Committee on Territories instructed Chairman Platt to favorably report the Idaho statehood bill, with it to be presented to the Senate on Wednesday.
Carnegie offers to spend at least 1,000,000 on public libraries in Pittston. City council accepted the project and will provide 40,000 yearly for maintenance. Charles J. Clarke, a prominent financier, offers a 100,000 site in the East End for the central library building.
