East St. Louis February 5 A terrible fire in a railroad shanty injured seven men who were warming themselves around a stove. Residents rushed to help as screams and groans filled the room. Fire began after an oil-soaked stove exploded, coal oil traces found, and a tin can nearby. Victims Morris Mobin James Donohue William Gilkie Pata Scott Sanderson Joseph McGee Fred Erickson all severely burned with uncertain prognosis.
William J. Higgins, after being bitten on the arm by a dog, drowned the animal and later, while seated with three men, heard gunfire and fled, then died suddenly. Authorities suspected hydrophobia as the cause of death in the February incident at No 125 Water Street.

A prisoner James Clark assaulted deputies McKain Greaves and Edwards at Riverside Penitentiary after being ordered to the dungeon for an infraction. McKain suffered a fatal neck wound, Greaves and Edwards were seriously injured but survive, and all three were rushed to hospital for treatment.
El Paso reports heavy sentiment among settlers in New Mexico and Arizona for the execution of Geronimo and his followers after his unconditional surrender. The war, ongoing since May 1885, has been among the toughest for regular troops in the West.
