New York January 30. Mrs Marie Antoinette Pollard elocutionist and widow of historian E A Pollard sat late in her second floor front hall at No 46 West Fourteenth Street. Her dog Julia suddenly howled then alarmed, smoke filled the hall and Pollard awoke Worcester to open the hall door. The fire started in Bassford's store from an overheated stove and spread to the stairway roof while residents on upper floors remained safe. losses estimated at $16,900.
Burrato New York January 30 A lamp explosion in a three story building at Main and Lake streets near the Juvenile Templars lodge triggers a large blaze. Buffalo firefighters prevent wider ruin but claim two lives including a ten year old boy and an elderly resident who died from heart strain. Several injured, some leaping from upper windows, as the lodge room fills with panicked youths. The Martin estate owner occupied the space and damage is extensive across the block.
The Bound Brook fast express traveling sixty miles an hour derailed after a forward coach wheel broke. The wreck crashed into a coal train on a siding, destroying four cars and injuring twenty-one passengers, many seriously. Most injured are from Philadelphia. a $100,000 loss is anticipated.
London reports Lord Wolseley telegraphed from Korti that General Earle's troops have reached within seven miles of Birti after a hard river passage. They will concentrate today and attack Birti on Tuesday. A later message says survivors from Abu Klea and Gabutey arrived on January 26 aboard the order.

Washington January 29 The House Appropriation Committee completed the Postal appropriation bill proposing a ten cent special stamp that grants immediate delivery within carrier limits or within one mile of a post office for cities with 4000 population or more when designated as a special delivery office. Postmasters would record stamped letters and pay monthly compensation up to thirty dollars. estimates show forty nine million dollars appropriated for the current year with allocations for postmasters clerks and the free delivery system.
