On January 20 at 12:45 a Baltimore and Ohio passenger train collided with a westbound freight near Chicago Junction. Three killed and others injured or mangled as cargo including Uncle Sam silver scattered. Conductor Charles Palmer and brakeman Thomas Creese were aboard the caboose and failed to signal. Killed include J R Bristow conductor Piedmont Virginia, George Vandalier fireman Lafayette Indiana, and Charles Palmer conductor Garrett Indiana. Wounded and mangled victims treated at Tiffin before transport to Garrett.

Lasaux Jan 20 Six hundred people gathered in a new hall behind the Methodist Episcopal Church to celebrate Robert Burns when the floor began a total collapse but the congregation, led by Rev Jas White, paused and helped the sinking floor stop. An investigation found the rod inside a bolt had stripped due to heat, and the crowd dispersed safely. A subscription list is circulating to reward the pastor for his quick actions.
The Secretary of the Treasury announces redemption of the 8 percent 1882 bonds with March 1 1586 as the payment date at the U S Treasury. Bonds are issued under the 1882 act and include 50 to 100 to 10000 denominations, original and substituted bonds distinguished by serial numbers, all to be called by original numbers.
Advanced sheets from a Biennial Miller's Directory show a net decrease of 6,812 touring mills in the United States and Canada since 1884. In London on January 20 the Queen accepted the resignations of Lord Salisbury and his Cabinet and summoned Mr Gladstone for consultation. Salisbury returned from Osborne under detective guard as the deadlock with Lord Hartington persists over the need for census or revenue measures. The Queen ordered ministers not to resign before Monday and weighed the choice between the ex-Premier and Lord Hartington.
The body of a man was found one mile east of the town near a hay stack surrounded by hay and an old carpet sack. A supply of fishing tackle was nearby. He appears to have been smothered when the hay stack fell. No identification was found on the remains.
An explosion at the Bankeville coal mine of Long & Co. cremated nine mules and set the pit on fire this morning. Several miners were at work but all escaped unharmed. The fire continues to burn.
Washington January 28 The Capitol terraces progress as weather permits. Marble from Massachusetts quarries panels nine feet long and one foot seven inches thick ships to Washington via Richard's wharf. Workers dress the stone for an early spring renewal, with west front plans adding double windows for light and ventilation and a continuous white marble appearance joining wings to the center.
Dr J H Rauch of the State Board of Health reports a Richfield Township boy exposed to glanders after caring for two diseased horses. He is kept from school and an investigation ordered as the state notes five prior human glanders cases, three fatal, with fear the disease could be eradicated only by extinction of these horses.
The Evening News reports Lord Salisbury has urged Queen Victoria to summon Lord Hartington to form a new cabinet, with Earl Granville, Lord Rosebery, and Earl Spencer likely as members. Granville as Foreign Secretary would provoke Liberal discontent, while some papers advocate inviting Gladstone allies or Parnell to craft a home rule plan.
MONONCARELA City Pa Jan 28 The Uniontown express halted as a huge boulder slid onto the track. Clark Isler son of a miner heard the rock and signaled the train saving it from a likely fatal wreck. Passengers raised a large purse for the boy.
An unusual dust shower descended on Austin on Thursday afternoon around 4 60, piling up as night fell. The fine particles stirred the lungs and throat, causing irritation and hoarseness in some residents. The event recalls a similar occurrence witnessed eight years earlier.
A January 23 special claims about 15,000 head of cattle dead across a 75 mile radius of Fort Elliott Texas. The piece says starvation and exposure during the recent cold snap killed the cattle and that native cattle accounted for less than one percent of the total.

Baltimore dispatch reports Henry Warner a 60 year old Black man was killed by a train on the Baltimore and Ohio line at Calvert Is at night. He was the father of thirty three children.
East Saginaw Mich January 28 The Saginaw Courier publishes its annual detailed review of Michigan lumber products noting the state still dominates the industry In 1830 census counted 1649 establishments employing 30886 with 392604284 capital and 52449923 output The Courier shows 2952033159 feet of lumber cut and 1097526297 feet on hand at year end Shingle production reached 890158500 feet Prospects for the coming season are bright and operators hopeful
New York reports a moving train telegraph demonstration by the Railroad Telegraph and Telephone Company at Clifton Staten Island. Edison witnessed as a car operator used telephone plates and a Morse key while wires, roofs, and air formed a condenser. Messages were sent to and from the moving car, aiding train dispatchers.
At hear ing Judge Dyer weighs whether death by own action qualifies as an accident under a $10,000 policy from the Accident Insurance Company of North America. Edward Crandall purchased the policy May 23, 1884 and died by own act July 7. Mrs Laurette Crandall sues for payout, with testimony describing his cheerful nature and recent troubles. The trial continues tomorrow.
W W Mikles of Bourbon and J W Card of Warsaw arrested for forging thousands of dollars in notes against county farmers. Signatures of thirty six taxpayers were clipped from the Assessor and stolen, left with an attorney for collection. Card jailed. Mikles seeks bail amid community uproar.
Ottawa reports Gov Oglesby allowed Peter A Weast, a three year penitentary inmate, to attend his daughter's funeral at Streator. Weast, guarded, stayed in jail until Sunday then traveled by jincksleigh to Streator. More than 1,000 attended the service. This marks the first such funeral attendance by a convict.
James Hurd, sixty, was instantly killed at Sandoval when a west bound express struck his wagon as he attempted to cross the Ohio and Mississippi track. The horses also died. another teamster narrowly escaped a similar accident earlier today.
In Huntingdon Pennsylvania on February 1 authorities report Mr and Mrs Thomas Westbrook robbed during temporary absence from home. The couple had saved 4500 in cash for fifteen years and secreted it in an old trunk along with valuable papers.
Omana Nebraska February 1. At Kearney on Saturday Dr Ramaciotti acting for the State Veterinarian shot six horses from Chicago out of a constant of twenty. The horses were claimed to be afflicted with hydrophobia.
At a noon incident six miles from LaPeer Mica, the balance-wheel of a saw-mill burst. Joseph Beamer suffered fatal head injuries while Albert McNair had his foot amputated. Local authorities reported the accident and transported the injured for treatment.
Breckenridge Colorado February 1 snow slide on the Denver road buries three men under a hundred feet of snow and rocks at the foot of the mountain. The accident blocks the route and rescue efforts are underway as authorities assess the scene and search for survivors.
A Bush era Boston Budget note describes a bashful man handing a hymn book to a woman with a mark indicating the hymn beginning. The mark is transferred to the hymn In the Sweet By and By. The parson would receive a marriage fee soon after.

A German captain tells a private soldier a grim joke about not losing his head in battle. The quip suggests a soldier would have nowhere to place his head if it were lost. Texas Siftings.
Mrs. Bayard died early today after the shock of her daughter Marys sudden death. The secretary and his family faced the tragedy with strain as the brain congestion followed the shock, leaving him unconscious for hours before her passing. Mrs. Bayard had long suffered invalid health, with recent liver issues and declining strength, and was about fifty one years old at her death.

Washington on January 31 reports over 5 million dollars of 3 percent bonds from the 132d call for 10 million to mature February 1 have been received at the Treasury for redemption.
Coxcorp New Hampshire January 31 reports a forty eight hour sleet storm causing extensive state damage. Large fruit growers say orchards are ruined and garden fruit injuries are severe. Portsmouth and Mottinghampton report heavy losses including a man losing 1000 peach trees.
