The president discusses corporate regulation, capital and labor, anti bribery efforts, the Isthmian Canal, Alaska, and overseas territories. He endorses stronger corporate oversight, equal treatment of unions and capital, extraditable bribery, and a Panama canal settlement with a new treaty granting the United States extensive transit and security rights.
A Circulation states 3000 soldiers left Cartagena for the isthmus while the US cruiser Atlanta is sent to the Gulf of Darien to monitor developments. Officials doubt an overland march possible due to terrain yet treat the move as a alerting gesture amid tensions with Colombia. Colombian officials provide cautious, noncommittal remarks as reports spread.
United States immigration inspectors arrested George C. Kellar a livery stable proprietor Chas G Romer at Kellars and Mary Simpson a boarding house keeper at Ellicott and Clinton streets for alleged involvement in smuggling Chinese nationals from Canada. A boatman named McConache was later arrested for transporting Chinamen across the Niagara River. Additional arrests expected as the probe widens.
The Senate committee on post offices and post roads, led by Penrose, asks the postmaster general to send all papers from the recent post office investigation. The resolution authorizes further inquiry, with expenses paid from the Senate contingent fund. The measure, referred to the contingent expenses committee, also enables issuing subpoenas and sworn testimony as needed.
In Hastings Colorado on December 8 seven wives of striking miners attacked marshals Milt Hightower and George Waybright as they tore down shanties on the Victor Fuel Co property in the Italian quarter. Marie Vannelli struck Hightower with a butcher knife cleaver nearly severing an ear. Waybright was beaten. The women were arrested and taken to Trinidad for trial.
Word reached in Trinidad Colorado that a pitched battle occurred Monday night at Segundo a Colorado fuel and iron camp between about 30 striking pant miners and seven guards. Three strikers were shot and two likely to die with shots to groin head and leg. No guards injured though one had his hat shot off.
New York December 8 Eight human skeletons believed to be continental soldiers who died in the revolution were uncovered by workmen excavating in City Hall Park near the old hall of records, suggesting a wartime burial site discovered in the park.
Great Falls Montana December 8 Meidner Ben W age 26 washer at local studio learns he has inherited an estimated $100000 from his mother Mrs R B Meidner who died in St Louis leaving him the fortune
Washington reports the state department has been informed that Spain and France will send war ships to New Orleans for the Louisiana purchase celebration from December 18 to 20.
Mrs Catherine I Curtin widow of Andrew G Curtin former Pennsylvania governor and congresswoman died suddenly of apoplexy at age 84 in Bellefonte, Pa. She had served in the 47th 48th and 49th congresses.
Cumberland Md December reports a cable message from Hankow China announcing the death of Bishop James Addison Ingle of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He died of fever at age 36 and the notification was received Monday.
In St. Louis on December 7 a union of unemployed men unaffiliated with any labor group organized as the National Workers' Union. Officers have been elected and a constitution drafted. The aim is direct contact with employers to benefit workers and hirees, with similar unions planned nationwide.
Government authorities confiscate 14 000 Mexican cigars from a private warehouse in San Francisco. Many cigars valued at 25 cents each. Believed to have been brought in concealed in sacks by crew of the cruiser New York.
New York December 7 reports say despite official statements the Duke of Manchester is seriously ill and bedridden at his castle. The duchess, formerly Miss Zimmerman of Cincinnati, is at his side.
San Bernardino California December 7 The latest news reports that forest fires in the mountains are sweeping through the area with estimates of about 39 000 acres burned.
Frederick Lewis will impersonate Edgar Allan Poe in a stage production of The Raven. George C. Hazleton is currently involved in preparations. Commander F A Miller of the U S N has bought a church pew in St John’s Washington, paying $1,000. The note says 2700 actors are out of work due to strikes hindering theater repairs.
In St Louis a trio passed counterfeit bills in the north city for more than a week. Ed ward Ratcliffe known as Red confessed to involvement after police found six feet of spurious money in a room on Oliver street. Ratcliffe said two accomplices, unnamed, traveled from Chicago with the counterfeits. Ratcliffe to be arraigned before US Commissioner Gray. In Philadelphia Alfred Struse, a former watchman, was jailed on counterfeiting aiding convicts with bail set at $2000. About 11 penitentiary inmates implicated.
Representative Prince of Illinois on the banking and currency committee introduced a bill to invest 100 million dollars of public monies held in national bank depositories at five million dollars per month into state, county, and municipal bonds yielding not less than two percent. The bonds match those in the Aldrich bill, with authority to sell up to ten million dollars at a time.
The group formed in Washington on December 3 decides to retain a lawyer and file a petition against Senator Reed Smoot. They will dispatch speakers nationwide and hold mass meetings in New York Washington Wilmington Philadelphia and other locations as part of the protest.
In East St. Louis on December 8 Joe Irvin a 32 year old Black man fired on Edward Lawson a 30 year old white man whose home is in Mount Vernon Illinois. A mob of about two hundred gathered but police intervened and kept Irvin safe at the East St. Louis police station. Lawson is not expected to survive.
Six of the English string owned by Jas R Keene reached New York on the Minnetonka from London. The group includes Hurst Park Dalesman Dazzling Cap and Bells Out of Reach and a Cyllene filly named Lady Minton, with the arrival noted as part of the Atlantic liner’s voyage.
New Haven Conn Dec 8 James J Hogan of Torrington Conn unanimously elected captain of the Yale football team for the coming year. Hogan has played right or guard tackle on the Yale squad for three years. Dwight of New York introduced a bill to establish a post currency with notes in denominations of five ten twenty five and fifty cents.
United States auxiliary cruiser Dixie will land a company of marines on Tuesday. They will camp at Empire Station near Culebra Cut while the battleship Maine coals near Bocas del Toro.
J D Powers president of United States Trust Co Louisville Ky was seriously injured in a Reno Nevada railroad wreck October 17 while en route to a bankers convention and was discharged from the hospital on Monday.
Boston authorities faced a crime surge with 21 daylight robberies in 17 days. The police board on Monday ordered a large guard detail to curb the spate of daytime burglaries and protect pedestrians and businesses in the city.
