Kingston Ont August 16 Dr Metcalfe superintendent of Rockwood Asylum died this afternoon after being stabbed by a lunatic on Thursday.
Jianna Brinckle, confined twenty seven years at the State Lunatic Asylum Harrisburg amid fallen Philadelphia society status, is released and moved to the Convalescents Retreat near Glen Mills Delaware County. Her father Dr William Draper Brinckle's fortune decline and a family bid to gain release shaped her confinement.
Camden coroner reports the death of Margaret Kealey on a White Horse farm as cholera like. The Irish migrant, who arrived two weeks earlier, fell ill briefly before death, with authorities pursuing a formal cholera determination and disinfection.
Mary Daniels of Terre Haute and Charles A Stewart, a Black man, completed one year for bigamy and were released at Joliet. Daniels had been lightened by prison stains to appear white, while Stewart waited outside. Daniels then boarded a St Louis train with her former colored husband and eluded him.
Washington August 14 Mrs Samuel M Shoemaker loses world renowned cow Princess Second to inflammation of the lungs. The eight year six month old imported animal yielded forty six pounds ten and a half ounces of butter in seven days in 1885. Her death leaves Burnside Park Jersey herd hoping to replace her with Oxford Kate who has a record of thirty nine pounds twelve ounces in seven days.
The latest seven day tally from R G Dun shows 168 business failures across the United States and Canada, down from 180 a week ago and 201 the week before. Western and Pacific states account for more than half of the total casualties.
Waldo P. Johnson, a well known St Louis lawyer and former U S Senator at the start of the Civil War, died yesterday in Osceola Missouri. He served in the Confederate army under General Price and later sat in the Confederate Senate.
Troy New York August 13 The 21 year old James Horace Jones was hanged at the city jail today at 10 13 am for the murder of his wife Amelia. He died in thirteen minutes after the Sheriff pulled the rope. Jones faced the sentence fearlessly.
The Senate votes to spend about 750000 to terrace the Capitol on three fronts. Extensions will add length and width, increasing total building size to 751 feet by 324 feet with tall porticos. Rotunda and galleries will serve up to 1000 people, reshaping the iconic structure.
A nearly fourteen year old girl was seized by two men and forced into a hack in a thickly settled Rochester street. Detectives tracked the outfit toward the city outskirts but found no trace at first. The girl, under guardian Dr Charles Sumner, had ties to Philadelphia relatives amid a disputed Catholic conversion claim. Police later located Lizzie Kane in a city outskirts house with altered clothing ready for an overnight train.
Aug 14 at Musselshell Ed Goulding and two cowmen clashed with a Piegan party of about twenty along Razor and Half-Breed Creeks. The band carried seventy five stolen horses. After a brief exchange the attackers were killed, the raiders fled for reinforcements, then the pursuing party killed the entire Piagan group and recovered the horses. The broader impact on nearby bands remains uncertain.

In Ithaca New York a landslide on the Cayuga and Lake Shore branch during heavy rain buried four laborers. Michael McManous Patrick Mahon and Michael Fahey were killed. a fourth man escaped. Mc Manus was unmarried while the others left large families.
A telegram from San Francisco published here claims Maxwell, accused in the C Arthur Preller murder, declares he will produce Preller alive and well and reveal how the body in the trunk was obtained. He says the trunk body was bought by himself and Preller for reinsurance money.
Aboard the Samuel M. Felton a dynamite or grenade explosion injured sixteen passengers, many women and children, with some feared fatally. The forward part of the boat was badly damaged above water, the upper deck torn away, but the vessel remained intact below the waterline. Prompt aid and calm spared more deaths as crews fought fire and panic near Pumapetrura, Pa.
In New Orleans on August 17 Emile Ledrott molded gun balls while his wife filled his powder-horn. A gust of wind carried a spark to explosives, causing a massive explosion that ripped the roof off. Three children were killed, the mother died later from injuries, and the husband and two other children were badly wounded. Neighbors rushed to the scene as the family lay horrifically injured.
In Wilkes Barre Andrew Andra of Nanticoke bought a revolver then shot Hungarian wife Joseph Tomaski’s wife grazing her neck before killing himself with two shots. One bullet lodged in windpipe and brain, death is immediate.
Maxwell drew many visitors in St. Lovurs Missouri Aug 17 identified by Southern Hotel staff as Preller's roommate. He allegedly admitted his right name is Hugh M Brooks and said he met Preller in Liverpool then traveled to this country. He retained lawyer John I Martin. no confession yet.
Ten arrests were made of a criminal society active in Rome Naples and Spolito. A house search of a member, a former government official, uncovered correspondence with New York agents for selling Italian girls to Americans. Prices ranged from 40 to 80 pounds.

Pittsburgh, August 17. Hon. John B. Guthrie, twice mayor of Pittsburgh and long time Special Agent of the U S Treasury in Washington, member of the State Constitutional Convention, died at Cresson after a brief illness. He was seventy eight years old.
Washington August 17 Chief Clerk John Tweedale of the War Department will act as Secretary of War during the absence of Secretary Endicott. Endicott will be away from Washington until about October 1.
A torpedo lowered into an oil well near Richburg New York caused the oil to surge and blow the torpedo against the pull wheel. The blast demolished the derrick boiler and engine houses. Workers escaped by rushing outside as the house nearby was shattered by the shock.
