An illegal mob seized a jailer and forced him to hand over keys. Murphy pleaded for life but was hurried away and told to expect hanging by morning. Officials and others were present as the incident unfolded in Winchester.
New York August 16 A test of government policy occurred when Heidelbach Ykelheimer Co offered one million dollars in treasury notes issued for silver purchases and demanded one million dollars in gold for shipment to Germany by Tuesday’s steamer. Treasury officials paid out the gold in exchange for the notes, moved by the steamer.
FRANKFORT Ky Aug 16 Gov Brown vetoed a pair of revenue measures passed by the general assembly halting work eight and a half months into the session. With adjournment near a deficit looms and bankruptcy appears likely as lawmakers face a difficult choice.
Peter Smith of Pleasant township testified before county commissioners that eight of his sheep were chased by dogs to a creek bank and one by one drowned themselves to avoid being mauled. He sought $40 in compensation for the losses.

Wasu Hineron Aug 15 reports Hon. John G. Warwick member of Congress from the Sixteenth Ohio district died Sunday night at the Riggs house of dysentery. Remains depart Washington Monday evening for Massillon arriving Tuesday morning. Services at 1 p.m. at the Episcopal church. Ohio and other state congressional members will attend.
The Great Northern’s first regular through train to Spokane departed St. Paul at 7 40 p m on Sunday evening marking the full operation of the line. The brand-new train was fully crewed and well filled with passengers.
