London reports a new dispatch from Dr Bas sano noting a marked increase in cholera at Marseilles. Six new patients were admitted to the Karo Hospital, all in critical condition, with fifty cases total there and 521 admitted since the epidemic began, 208 recoveries. A twelve year old boy, son of Frank Mauchin, was killed by a cannon blast at a Republican rally in Xenia. The gunner ran low on paper and fired, the cannon burst, sending a fifteen pound piece through the air, destroying skull and brain. A bystander carried the boy away as the scene scattered debris and the improvised platform was wrecked.
In Prrisburg Pennsylvania on August 9 George Metz aged twenty one, confined at Mercy Hospital for mental illness, abducted by his sister Mrs Roche, and took an eighteen month old child from her home at Sharpsburg. He threw the child from a second floor window about fifteen feet to the sidewalk. The infant survived with minor injuries after medical examination. Metz was moved to Dixmont hospital for treatment.
A Shanghai dispatch reports five French ships under Admiral Lespes bombarded and captured Kelung on Formosa. The Times notes Pekin will not accept mediation in the Franco Chinese dispute and that the Tsung Li Yamen has regained confidence. Paris confirms the occupation of Kelung.

Van West Ohio August 9. Sigmund, the eleven year old son of General A Jacobs, was catching behind the bat in a ball game when struck on the head. He walked home five blocks, then died within a quarter hour.
Sergeant David Linn of the Greely Expedition was buried in Philadelphia today. The ceremony was attended by many local G A R posts as a mark of respect for his service and sacrifice on the Arctic mission.
