An old advertorial praises hop bitters as a cure all for rheumatism fever ague bilious complaints and youth ailments. It claims relief for paralysis fevers and women’s health while touting the product as a safe general tonic for stomach ailments irregularities and fatigue with promises of renewed vitality and better sleep.
The Treasury reports July 1883 debt totals including 3.5 percent bonds at 32.0 million and total interest bearing debt at 1.338 billion. Cash in Treasury stands at 351.5 million, debt less cash 1.543 billion, with current liabilities and interest due. Across the Atlantic, a New York firm warns that low grade wool from Egypt Syria and nearby regions plus bed wools from Constantinople are exported via Marseilles and England possibly carrying infection during the Eastern Mediterranean epidemic.
In Harrisburg Missouri Green Wilhite aged twenty two was shot and killed by Deputy Marshal Childers a few days ago during an attempted arrest for assault Wilhite reportedly placed hands in his pockets and the deputy fearing a pistol drawn opened fire the man died instantly.
Neat cattle arriving from outside the Americas face a ninety day quarantine from shipment date. Canada’s imports incur no quarantine. Six men were killed instantly after two Troy and Boston Railroad freight trains collided between Petersburg Junction and Pownal Vermont on the first. The telegraph operator E W Johnson ignored a dispatcher stop order, causing the wreck with 45 and 25 car trains colliding, fifty cars derailed, some plunging into the Hoosac River, and cars catching fire as the dead were badly burned.
A man named D. W. Pressell was arrested on a rape charge involving a nine year old girl and was hanged in the Courthouse yard. Community officials report swift justice following the arrest.
Public square gun salutes marked the killing of informer Carey in Syracuse New York on the 2d. Thirty two shots were fired and two gunners were badly hurt by a premature explosion.
The Governor has received and accepted the resignation of Hon. John Paul from the U S Congress of Virginia, effective September 5, 1883. Judge Paul resigns to become U S District Judge for the Western District of Virginia, a post he was appointed to by the President last spring.

Italians attacked the black workers with picks and stilettos. the blacks drew razors and retreated with several wounded nearby.
Barker, a resident of Hurricane Creek in central Arkansas, killed his daughter after learning of her planned marriage against his wishes. Neighbors seized Barker and hanged him at his front door.
Charlie Ford arrested in Kansas City on complicity in the Blue Cat train robbery. He has been released on $5,000 bail as the case moves forward.
The Minnesota Democratic State Convention gathered in St Paul on the 2d. W M McNair was nominated for governor over Bierman on the first ballot. Prohibition resolutions were adopted. The platform calls for a tariff for revenue only, endorses River and Harbor bills, and urges revision of the patent law.
At Chicago on the second, a hack with Bosey and his three children James Josephine and Christine aged ten twelve and sixteen plunged into the river when frightened horses swerved as the Polk street bridge draw opened. The hackman and Bosey escaped while the children and the horses drowned.
The City of Wyandotte Kansas sues former City Treasurer Christopher Bernhard for 33000 dollars in district court alleging 28000 in bonds issued in 1881 to liquidate old bonds and turned over to the treasurer with no accounting. It further claims 5000 dollars received for scrip for street improvements remains unaccounted for.
A morning blaze in a Brooklyn tenement injured four residents, with two fatally. Prompt police and fire crews rescued many and limited property loss. The incident underscores rapid response preventing greater deaths.
Charles Henry Lee was hanged at Richmond, Virginia, on the 3d for the murder of Daniel Weller, another colored man, in Henrico County. A collection was taken to move Lee’s body to his parents for burial at home.

Stevens the U S Consul at Smyrna reporting that Damietta’s deadly illness is not Asiatic cholera but a malignant local distemper caused by filthy town conditions and unclean lower-class practices. The damning factors include polluted water used for fish and disposal of offal and diseased carcasses.
At Dokan Mine near Harrisburg Alaska three Indians broke into a cabin of miners Martin and Rennie stealing whisky. Rennie was killed in a ensuing chase. Citizens arrested the trio, an armed escape attempt followed. one Indian was lynched and the second hanged by order of Colonel Barry after the third was delivered.
B F Semic assistant surgeon US Army found dead in his Occidental Hotel San Francisco room with a poison bottle nearby. Vernon US barracks sergeant in New Orleans died by suicide on the same day after a love affair disappointment. In New Brunswick at TROCadie a land dispute ended with Bowie’s fifteen year old son killing McDonald with a shotgun. Philadelphia grocer William Smien, age forty, died after a domestic quarrel days ago.
A Swedish born governor, described as educated, shot a woman dead with a pistol and then killed himself at Englewood near Chicago a few days ago. It is alleged he was the illegitimate son of King Oscar of Sweden.
A Victoria dispatch reports extreme dry heat and widespread forest fires near Yale. The Onderdonk mill blast shattered all Yale glass. no fatalities but several injured. Three hundred sixty cases of giant powder and ten cases of black powder exploded, causing heavy losses.
In Ekaterinoslav, Russia, mobs attacked Jewish residents. Soldiers dispersed the rioters. ten Jews were killed and thirteen wounded. The Town Council offered 5,000 roubles to compensate losses and provide shelter for the homeless. A London dispatch notes Queen Victoria refuses to travel for health, plans to stay near John Brown's grave at Balmoral.
