Captain William F. Smith aboard the bark Nautilus reported a sea serpent about eighty feet long seen near Cape Berkeley. The creature approached the ship as bombs were fired for about fifteen minutes, finally sinking dead about twenty feet from the vessel.
Washington Aug 2 C A Kenaston of the Geological Survey has been appointed by the Secretary of the Interior as a special commissioner to visit France. He will study the irrigation system there to improve U S methods. Secretary Noble regards arid land reclamation as vital and plans to use all European knowledge.
A storm struck Ricum Monyd yesterday at 12:50 morning, lightning hit the west end railway stables just outside city limits, causing a blaze that consumed the building before aid arrived. Sixty mules and horses perished and seven street cars were also destroyed.
John L. Sullivan, arrested Wednesday, appeared before Judge O'Brien in Supreme Court Chambers. Through his counsel Delancey Nicoll, he admitted he is the person named in the extradition writ and agreed to go South. Judge O'Brien ordered immediate transfer to Deputy Sheriff Childs of Jackson Mississippi.

Lightning hit H. L. Lowles barn in Alburgh yesterday with no storm nearby. The bolt shattered part of the building killed two horses and injured other animals, while several nearby people were prostrated by the shock. The event’s oddity lies in the absence of any storm within two miles of the strike.
In Pirrspurau Pennsylvania on August 1 Rev Flemon a colored preacher charged with murder was moved at 9 50 pm by two South Carolina officers amid threats of rescue. A large crowd gathered around the jail and station but no outbreak occurred and he was transported to the train safely.
Acting Secretary Batchellor notified the Navy Secretary that Chinese enlisted as servants on the U S Steamship Alert from Honolulu to San Francisco are laborers under the Chinese exclusion act and will not be permitted to land in the United States.

Washington August 2 The Attorney General has sent a report to the President concerning E L Harper of the Fidelity Bank Cincinnati and the general belief is that the report is adverse to his pardon.
In San Francisco on August 2, John Williams a cook aboard the steamship Wellington was arrested for smuggling 500 boxes of opium into the port.
London reports snow storms and icy rains across Switzerland. Mountain passes are partly blocked and floods are widespread in Silesia. The weather disrupts travel and commerce as authorities monitor conditions.
The license bill was passed by the Legislature today and the special session adjourned to meet according to law in Providence Rhode Island on August 2.

A Woonsocket dispatch reports Mrs. Fred Pheineking, 26, a German woman living on a farm sixteen miles northwest of Minneapolis, killed herself by taking two teaspoonfuls of paris green. Her newborn baby, four days old, survived. she believed the child to be dead.

In Knoxville Tennessee on August 3 George Price an elderly relic hunter was found dead from starvation in his hut at the eastern edge of the city. Local authorities reported the death as due to starvation with no immediate signs of foul play. Price was a longtime resident known for his scavenging of historic relics in the area.
In City of Mexico on August 3 Via Galveston reports the lead mines in Nuevo Leon are closing as a result of the U S government imposing duties on lead ore.
Miss Louise A. Andrews of Milwaukee was drowned while bathing at Devil's Lake yesterday afternoon. The death occurred in the popular resort area with authorities noting the tragedy as a sudden fatal accident.
Point Pleasant West Virginia August 3 John Jones who was stabbed here last week in a row with William McClintock died in jail last evening at five o'clock.
Blountsville Alabama reports all prisoners escaped last night by climbing stove flue to the roof and leaping to the ground. Among them was John Livingstone charged with the murder of his sister.
Syracuse Aug 3 The United Glass Company owner of most window glass works in New York and beyond today acquired Keystone Glass Works Meadville Pennsylvania and Diamond Glass Company's Ravenna Ohio works expanding its regional control and production capacity.
A Walton Kentucky dance for colored residents erupted in a brutal melee after a quarrel between two women and a man. Pistols knives and razors were used with nearly fifty shots fired. At least six participants were fatally wounded, including Rube Finnel Harris Johnson John Robinson Bartley Carson. Others were seriously injured and many more hurt. The town grew tense as white citizens warned of further bloodshed and the era of nightly drunken brawls continued.
Wabash Western train No 4 was held up five miles east of Kansas City and two miles west of Randolph Station. Two masked men robbed passengers in the rear coaches, securing about 175 in cash and several watches and jewels while passengers offered little resistance. The robbers escaped. The Spokane Falls fire destroyed 25 blocks and caused an estimated loss of 14 million dollars.

In Rockford Illinois on August 5 Maurice Downer age seventy went to bed with a lit pipe. The flame ignited bedding and left him unconscious as one side of his body burned. He did not awaken due to the damage being partially dead and he later died.

Aug 6 report from Carino says General Grenfell’s forces defeated the Dervishes near Toski in a one sided engagement. Wad-el-Jumbi and twelve emirs were killed as the Dervishes suffered about 1,500 killed or wounded. Egyptian losses were around 100. Gunboats pursue remaining fighters.
Louisville reports indicate Sharp defeats Colston for State Treasurer by 30 000 to 40 000 votes while Buckner wins Governor and Tate Treasurer by about 20 000 in 1887. Republicans, buoyed by Harrison patronage and Tate’s defalcation, mounted a strong challenge, but Democrats delivered a traditional large majority after years without agitation.
Des Moines dispatch reports Delhi, once the county seat, nearly wiped out by a blaze that swept Gleason House and both sides of the street. About twelve buildings burned with heavy losses estimated at thirty thousand dollars and minimal insurance coverage.
