Shenandoah Pa Aug 1 4 Three attacks by ambushers outside town threaten 8th regiment encamped on a plateau. A Lithuanian named William Stoppanitz is in custody as the provost marshal tracks others. Soldiers fired warning shots during the first incident and patrolled to restore order as Brig Gen Gobin orders stern measures to end attacks.
New York August 4 A landsman E Brocar of the United States cruiser Montgomery died by self poisoning at the Brooklyn navy yard. Despondent over failing an naval yeoman exam he had recently joined the service. He was about nineteen and from Louisville Ky. Family requests body be sent there Monday. Brocar had been transferred from the receiving ship Columbia when he learned he was nearly eligible for a promotion except for defective eyesight.
Judge Goff granted a writ of habeas corpus for striking miners jailed by Judge Jackson in Parkersburg. The marshal was ordered to produce the prisoners here next Tuesday at 9 o'clock for hearing, marking a notable victory for the miners.
Billings Montana August 4 J W Perry known as Black Perry a notorious cattle rustler was shot and killed by James Haynie foreman of the Hysham Cattle Co at Sanders Station Sunday.

It combines a small passenger coach atop the boiler behind the smokestack with a heavily asbestos covered boiler and brussels carpet floors. Seats are amphitheater style for full track views, and passengers enter via winding stairs near the front pilot. The engine can be operated in either direction.
Pittsburg August 4 three boy bathers drowned Sunday in the Allegheny river at the foot of Thirty sixth street. Names: William J Carroll 14 Amiel Kologewski 12 and an unknown boy about 12. None could swim. Two went beyond their depths in dredge boat holes. Carroll boy died while attempting to save companions.

Four persons were killed in a Sunday head on collision between milk trains on the Ontario & Western railroad at Hortons Delaware county New York. The wreck destroyed two engines and derailed several cars.
An excursion train on the Ann Harbor railway composed of eleven coaches with 700 passengers was wrecked six miles north of Cadillac Michigan on Sunday. About a dozen people sustained injuries in the derailment.
