In Lixcox Nebraska on April 18 farmer F W Flowerdew faced a rampaging range steer while measuring land. The beast charged repeatedly as the man fought using his hand in its nostrils then a club. After a half hour of combat the steer mortally wounded Flowerdew before dying from blood loss.
April 18 reports from Wellington TiFrin and To epo describe a severe snowstorm delivering eight inches in places. Trains delayed, wires down, business suspended as a cold northeaster blasts the region. Fruit trees in bud fear damage amid late season winter conditions.
A Seven Mile Ford, Smith County, report says Browles house near Lyncasure V a burned last night. Two daughters, aged nineteen and twenty one, were burned to death and three other occupants severely injured who cannot survive. Fire blamed on defective flues.
A freight train wreck near Palatine Ul. PanTineE leads to the bursting of a massive water tank containing one hundred thousand gallons. Five people die outright two boys and three men, with others injured as a crowd watched. The tank fell on spectators and the hoops fractured suddenly, crushing victims.
In Bucyrus Ohio on April 17 the mastodon remains were partly unearthed on Hubert Dubois’s farm two miles east of Tiro by Mr. Michner while digging a ditch for Dubois. Large teeth and massive bones were recovered with teeth weighing up to over two pounds and twenty inches in circumference. Many bones were found but decayed and crumbled when handled.

A western cyclone tornadic event struck Belmont County near St. Clairsville on April 15. Dwellings barns and other structures were demolished including the infirmary barn, Pickering’s barn, Patton’s house and barn, Coleman’s residence and mill, and the Welday block. The First National Bank and Troll’s Sons store suffered major losses with the nearby court house and school building reported damaged. Estimated losses reach up to $200,000 with many homes and churches destroyed. The storm traveled east from near the county infirmary at around 3:15 p m, flattening entire blocks and lifting or throwing animals and debris, as witnesses described a funnel shaped mass of cloud resembling dense smoke.
A Raleigh telegram reports Mormon elders from Tennessee working to convert women in Buncombe and Henderson counties sparking strong local fury. An organized expulsion group is formed and threats of force and assault are mentioned as residents vow to drive them out. Some Mormons have already been beaten and driven into Georgia amid mounting indignation.
In Bloomington on April 14, 1934, a severe drought across central Illinois brings near record heat. No rain for six weeks with daily near ninety degree heat. Farmers haul water, pastures scarce, oats backward, fields dusty and hard to harrow. Corn planting advancing three weeks early. crops mostly uninjured aside from grass.
The Victoria wreck near Dieppe shows the New Haven and Dieppe Packet struck rocks amidships. Wasasa April 14. Christian Hornish, a prosperous farmer near Dora, was cheated out of fifty dollars by three sharpers. They sold him a fake Huntington lottery ticket, taking a brass watch as collateral to be returned with his prize, but he learned the watch note was for $300. The swindlers are believed to be the same who tricked Solomon Lewis of Warren days earlier.
News from New York dated April 18 reports a morning snowstorm starting at 7 oclock. By 9 oclock about 11.4 inches lay on the ground and by 10 oclock the precipitation turned to sleet with a crust of ice. The storm is described as general across the eastern portion of the state with interior reports confirming wide coverage.
In Kokomo on April 17 thirty five quarts of nitro glycerine were lowered 956 feet into the Panhandle and Lake Erie and Western crossing gas well and exploded with great force. The new well reportedly shows 375 pounds pressure, comparable to Findlay’s Karg well, as a roaring blaze shoots fifty feet high and the derrick trembles.
New York April 17 a large whale was captured off Amagansett Long Island by Captain Edwards and crew. After harpooning he was struck by the whale and thrown fifteen feet into the water. He was picked up unconscious and is in critical condition ashore.
Springfield Illinois April 15 commemorates Abraham Lincoln's death in the Hall of Representatives with the Lincoln Guard of Honor directing a two hour service. Bishop Seymour and Hon W H Cullom delivered addresses. Clinton L Conkling read a historical paper on the Guards labor guarding Lincoln's remains.
In Milwaukee area a suburban Williamsburg village school teacher George Werner punished pupil Henry Sengbusch with a ruler on the wrists. The boy collapsed and died after water was dumped on him. The teacher vanished as angry farmers hunt for him amid claims of choking.
At Brrrao New York, April 18, navigation on Lake Erie is practically open. Several vessels prepare to depart for Chicago and Milwaukee tomorrow and Wednesday. Propellers Jim Sheriffs and J. A. Farwell, the season's first arrivals, entered the port last night.
Toronto April 15 A sensational poisoning case unfolds as Mrs Martha Jane Ryckman is charged with murdering her sister in law Mrs Hendricks. Police report seven Ryckman relatives died under mysterious circumstances believed to be poisoning.

In Springfield Illinois on April 14 the House approved a bill requiring non resident aliens who hold lands to dispose of them within three years after acquiring title. The measure provides escheat to the State if they fail to do so.
Washington reports that Chief Justice Cartter of the District Supreme Court died from stomach cancer. Dr. Lamb conducted the autopsy, and the remains will travel to Cleveland for the funeral on Tuesday evening.
