Two convicts Frank Williams and Livingston Cosgrove fled the Ohio Penitentiary in broad daylight via an underground air chamber from the east wing to the warden’s cellar. They donned citizen clothes found in the tunnel and left the prison unnoticed, prompting a citywide search. Williams, a plumber by trade, and Cosgrove, both convicted of burglary and larceny, were last seen after 3 PM. The April 11 strike by structural and ornamental iron workers ended with nine large employers conceding eight hour shifts for inside workers and nine hours for outside workers. The workers had previously been on ten hour days.
Newport Rhode Island April 11 The cruiser Detroit completed its preliminary trial runs Monday Sailing at maximum speed her first mile covered at about 19 knots with an average speed around 1865 10 knots The last two trials used forced draught and her high speed turning was noted as remarkable
Nashville April 11. The Home Fire Insurance Co. has ceased direct business and reinsured its risks with Westchester Co. of New York. Officials say the move was contemplated for some time and approved by the company’s members.
London April 11 report that the will of Squire Abingdon Caird made aboard the Majesty bound for New York has been discovered. The will allegedly benefits Mrs Langtry.
Gov W McKinley and wife arrived in Washington on Monday en route south for Mrs McKinley’s health. The governor declined to discuss politics during the visit.
A young woman, identity unclear, was found dead in a St James Street hotel bed Monday morning. No men present, no clear foul play. hotel clerk says lodging paid by a Walter Craig & Sons horse sale poster. Woman believed respectable, possibly Miss Hosler of Adelphia Ross County, previously arrested at Wilmington for fast driving. Marshal Kingston identified her.

No Water the famed Sioux leader linked to the ghost dance era and Pine Ridge trouble died Monday morning in Sioux Falls of pneumonia. He had been implicated in a recent four cowboy killings and was ill when arrested.
A prairie fire near the Clark county line in Siuron, South Dakota, destroys a German farmer named Gerland’s house, cattle sheds, and farm machinery, with grain and hay losses. Additional fires along Hand County's east edge cause further damage.

An order now allows affidavits from one credible witness and removes a photo requirement for residence certificates.
Richmont Virginia April 10 The executive committee of Leecamp in charge of removing Jefferson Daviss remains from New Orleans to Richmont has finalized the program Gen John B Gordon of Georgia will be chief marshal Gov Philip W McKinney of Virginia chairs invitations and reception Confederate camps statewide will join the committee The funeral train leaves New Orleans May 29 and arrives the evening of May 30 at the state capitol where a guard of honor will watch the casket overnight
Cincinnati April 10 A terrible accident at Northside station Cumminsville left Nick Steuer 27 and his wife Mary 23 dead after crossing the track to board a Baltimore and Ohio train they were struck by a Big Four train. Police will investigate and arrests may follow under a state law requiring waiting trains to stop at stations with passengers aboard. The Steuer couple lived in Madisonville Ohio and were visiting Cumminsville when killed.

In Valparaiso Indiana April 10 Lewis Foster buried two children who died of diphtheria. Upon returning from the funeral another child is dead and two more are near death. This marks the fifth family death in ten days with two more fatalities in January. Neighbors refuse aid fearing contagion.
Seattle April 10 Captain Christianson completed a record deep dive in Elliott Bay. He swam to the tug Majestic’s hatch and returned after twenty minutes with a lead line and bucket from a depth of 196 feet at half flood tide, showing no serious ill effects.
STANBERRY, Mo April 10 Two men Lee Newell and Leon Styles were burned to death in the calaboose after being arrested for drunkenness. It is supposed they set the building ablaze to attract attention and gain liberty, but relief came too late.
Secretary of State Taylor approved the Cleveland Canton and Southern railroad to raise its capital stock by 9 100 000 under the Massie law. The filing fee for the increase was 9 100 dollars, paid by check with the application.
