In Attica Wyoming County a mother drenched her two children and herself with kerosene and set them ablaze after quarrels with her husband. Scott Spring and a two year old perished, the mother fatally wounded with a throat cut as the house burned. The grisly scene followed a troubled marriage and plans to move west.

A Cuyler Colliery at Raven Run operated by S M Heaton & Co. caved in this afternoon entombing ten miners Frank McLaughlin William Anderson John Anderson Henry Mervine Maurer Nicholas Purcell Barneymith Michael Herrity Daniel Kenny and John arene. Rescue efforts were abandoned as the mine was deemed hopelessly blocked seven hundred feet deep with four lifts.
In Reading Pennsylvania Windsor Castle village near the Blue Mountains reports a strange malady affecting John Fink's five children Caroline twenty one Louise forty four Willie elf. Neighbors fear they are bewitched as paroxysms and spasms strike the siblings, with a rumored cat form blamed. Dr Hatfield cannot solve the case and Dr Hagenman visits, failing to improve the situation as crowds gather around the house.
In New York on April 6 at United Press offices twelve contestants raced in a 500 word dispatch. Winners were J W Roloson first for speed and clarity, William M Gibson second for speed and readability, Frank J Kihm third for notable speed though some character faults noted.

In Columbus March 31 to April 3, reports show a $20,000 bond issue for Cincinnati Health Department deficiencies. Myers and Littler discussed expulsion for disorderly conduct, sent to committee. Senate passed railway spark arresters, penalties for tampering, and minor employment rules. Police commission bill and Cleveland city reorganization bill advanced. Toledo Insane Asylum funding set at $200,000. A registry law and judicial campaign funds soliciting ban were introduced. a Senate bill on verdictees’ jurors duties noted.
New Orleans lawyers Ker nan and Levy announce they have found the heirs to the Levi or Weill fortune, valued at about 60 million dollars. Rosalie Weil, widow of Joshua Levi, left the estate to German heirs advertised in England but not located. Descendants of Hirsch Weil of Albushuler, Rheinpfaltz, Germany, emigrated to America and are identified as Rosalie Levi’s nieces and nephews. Samuel Weil of New Orleans, who found the notice, has two brothers here. Proof of kinship to Rosalie Weil Levi is asserted as indisputable.
An internal device using giant powder and nitro glycerine was found in the new Joliet courthouse. Investigators believe strikers aimed to blow up the building against contractors Sanger and Moody and Joliet Stone Company, who are recruiting workers. The quarrymen deny responsibility, calling it a setup to hurt their cause.
ATLanta April 5 The Atlantic Constitution reports Capt Evan P Howell editor in chief will not accept the consul appointment to Manchester. He forwards to the President his final declination, grateful for the honor and reception yet believes circumstances require declining.
The Utah Commission met with the President and the Attorney General to report on Utah affairs and to outline plans to curb polygamy. The President expressed satisfaction, pledged administration support, and the group planned further talks with Interior officials before traveling to Salt Lake City for a January 10 meeting.
The Interior Secretary has Attorney General opinion that President Arthur's February order opening lands to settlement is moot because Sioux Indians hold title under the 1868 treaty. White settlers who already entered under the order may lose any rights they acquired, prompting uncertainty over land claims.
The Shanghai Mercury cites a Viceroy decree in Yunnan and Kwechong ordering destruction of Roman Catholic convents and the killing of converts and foreigners. Reports say several settlements were destroyed and hundreds killed, including four converts and two priests at Kinyaping. A Tokio fire on March 6 left one hundred buildings burned and over a thousand families homeless.
In Columbus Indiana on April 5 the county commissioners ordered fifty cents for each hawk scalped under a state act. Farmer Eli Reed earned the belt for catching the most hawks in a novel method beginning with a dead rooster near his barn. A steel trap yielded nineteen hawks in a week, scalped and delivered for a $9.50 warrant drawn on the county treasurer.
New York reports a drop in failures with 231 total across the United States and Canada for the past seven days. R. G. Dun & Co. notes 197 US failures and 34 in Canada, down from 277 and 256 the prior weeks. Most failures come from Western Southern and Pacific states. New York City assignments are light.
Daniel Carrigan former Chief Clerk of the Navy Bureau pleaded guilty in four of seven navy fraud cases in Washington. Edwin C. Kirkwood previously indicted with Carrigan but already sentenced to six years, so no further court action was pursued. Carrigan was remanded for sentence.
Philadelphia April 6 report says the Mayor prohibited sparring in theaters and directed police to watch roller skating rinks closely. He urged parents to aid the police in correcting an abuse that threatens children's happiness and welfare.
Edward Nash aged twenty, described as insane, murdered his mother aged twenty two and sister aged fifty five at a farm house five miles west of Curiaco. He then stole a horse and wagon sled. Addison Nash, the father, found the bodies on returning home. Authorities pursue the violent suspect who had been in an asylum last year and had lived at home six months.
A Knoxville area fire killed Peon Joyce aged 75 and his three year old daughter along with Miss Rice aged 40 after a dwelling fourteen miles from Asheville burned to ashes. Foul play is suspected though no crew is found. The blaze left only smoldering ruins and great local excitement.

San Francisco reports light rains over the last two weeks boosted wheat and barley prospects in most state sections, with the San Joaquin Valley as the only exception. The state now has ample rainfall to ensure good average crops.
Governor Marmaduke and Congressman Bland telegraphed Commissioner Newman in Washington urging immediate use of federal powers to suppress pleuro-pneumonia detected in Callaway County Missouri and seeking vigorous action to stop the disease.
A Chinatown fire in San Francisco today caused $300,000 in damage and claimed the lives of three Chinese residents who perished in the blaze.
A severe snow storm sweeps Ontario with about eight inches of snow and ongoing snowfall. In Montreal, the storm persists since yesterday afternoon causing no trains arriving from the east or west.

PitrsBuRGH, Pa April 6 The river coal miners strike in Western Pennsylvania ended with operators conceding a wage increase. About six thousand miners have returned to work.
Alvin Allen of Walcott Vermont resisted arrest for forgery in Manson Iowa. He fired four shots at pursuing officers and a fifth shot killed himself instantly. Letters on his person indicate he fled justice and vowed not to be captured alive by the posse.
