Tax Exemption Tactics via Assessment Dates
FN Judson, Chairman of the Missouri Tax Commission, notes a practical shift in farm product taxation. Since June lists determine taxes, farmers face no current-year tax on crops as assessments are dated June for next year. This offbooks arrangement exempts farm yields without legal changes, discussed at the First National Tax Conference.

Public Tax Lists Published in Several States
The article notes that many localities publish complete lists of taxpayers and their assessments for publicity. Illinois has used the practice since 1807, Rhode Island and Delaware employ it to varying extents, and a few New Hampshire towns publish the list in pamphlet form. Nevada requires county lists. Juggling of Bank Deposits at Tax Time Causes Loss
We find the investment of money at tax time in nontaxable bonds to be our most serious loss. Money withdrawn from the deposit account or loaned on mortgage, or invested in government bonds returns for deposit later. Tax rate in our village is about 4 percent, 6 percent for good loans. A 4 percent nontaxable bond at about par is attractive. People prefer real estate mortgages to bonds and if tax rate were halved they would loan money on mortgage and keep it in the community. Local municipal bonds have been few. about $5,000 invested in local bonds in eight months by people who avoid reporting to the assessor. They buy 4 percent tax-exempt bonds. Those who lie to the assessor prefer leaving money in the bank at the same rate and use it anytime. A large majority desire to pay their fair tax and welcome a law placing all values on a more equal basis.

A Change in Chicago Costly Generating Plant Goes Out of Exi
Reports from Chicago indicate all municipal electric generating stations have shut down and the city now buys current from the Chicago sanitary district which uses water power from a drainage canal. The move could lower lighting costs but leaves much in city hands and may increase past lighting costs while showing municipal lighting as a gamble in operation and accounting.
