Fire swept through the Burkettsville property of D. P. Kent early Sunday, destroying the hardware store valued at eight thousand dollars and a two story residence. The building, insured for six hundred dollars, plus household goods, were lost as neighbors battled flames aided by snow and wind. The Kent family escaped with only a few garments.
Adam Peiffer of Covington was killed instantly Saturday at about six in the morning when struck by a passenger train on the Pennsylvania Railroad. Peiffer and E. T. Rogers were riding a handcar toward Bradford yards on the tracks between Covington and Bradford. Peiffer jumped from the handcar to dodge a train and was crushed by a freight on a different track. Rogers escaped with minor bruises. Peiffer, about 58, was well known in Covington.
A wartime appeal tells of a mother and father supporting their son who volunteers for service under draft age. The boy needs food and gear, while the government asks him to borrow money. Readers are urged to buy War Savings Stamps to lend the boy a quarter and secure repayment.
