Sarasota County takes North Jetty parcel, keeps fish camp

The county finalized purchase of 18.6 acres along the Intracoastal Waterway from Barnett Mortgage Trust for 1.782 million. Plans call for picnic tables and restrooms while preserving the North Jetty Fish Camp owned by Dottie and Max Johnston on a 50 foot easement. The Johnstons resisted eviction as the county down zoned development and moved to acquire land with open space funds, ensuring the camp remains open.

Venice council sets 60 day deadline for park sewer work action

Harbor Lights Mobile Home Park must begin sewer line work within 60 days or face city-initiated legal action. The five year annexation agreement expired last August and the park has not met its commitments. Edward Maslanka sold the park three years ago to Herbert Hofmann who recently submitted sketchy plans drawn by an unlicensed Florida engineer. The council considers back capacity charges a possible remedy and urged positive action.

Venice voters decide on revised city charter this Tuesday

Venice prepares for a pivotal election to approve or disapprove a revised city charter. Precinct 21 votes at Epiphany Church, Precinct 36 at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, Precinct 45 at Venice Recreation Center. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Copies of the proposal are at City Hall and the Sun Coast Gondolier office.

Countywide major crimes decline in 1976 says sheriff report

Sara sota County Sheriff's Department notes overall drop in major crimes in 1976 led by fewer murders from three to one and sharp declines in breaking and entering from 2,129 to 1,366. Larceny down three percent to 3,000. vehicle theft down 25 percent to 177. Calls for service up 20 percent to 37,531 as public vigilance grows.

The merger of the South County two semi weekly papers creates Sun Coast Gondolier Inc. Byron Vedder and Derek Dunn Rankin lead the new venture with Sam Dillon and Michael Corradino remaining in editorial and management roles. Dunn Rankin becomes president and publisher overseeing daily operations.

Free tennis courts open to public with new hours

Free play at the city's tennis courts starts Sunday with daily access from noon to 5 p.m. The courts will be staffed by city employees from 8 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. through the end of the fiscal year. Joan Benton resigns as tennis pro effective Saturday, June 18.
