City Administrator Dale Rieth admitted embarrassment after the reverse osmosis plant flooded Union Missionary Baptist Church for the second time. The church behind the plant experienced repeated drenches from an overflow in the plant’s de gasifier until a faulty valve was found and replaced.
Venice officials refuse to allow the Sarasota County School Board Ideal program to use Pinebrook restrooms until the city accepts the recreation complex. City owns the land but has not accepted the project, citing unfinished construction and a lack of city approval. The lease calls for portable classrooms and open restrooms for students, while contractors warn of potential liability until acceptance.
The Optimist Club of Roberts Bay marks Respect for Law Week on May 17 proclaimed by Venice Mayor Harry Case. Five area students are named Good Citizens and Venice Police Officer of the Year Major Allen A. Slater is honored at a May 6 dinner at Captain's Restaurant. Slater, with the Venice Police Department since 1951, has led juvenile outreach and was elected governor of Venice lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose.
Rev. L Daniel Anderson spoke to about 30 ministers at the Southeast Covenant Conference in Bay Indies Mobile Estates. He described his nine day December tour with 50 Miami area church members and presented a 45 minute slide show to illustrate life in Russia. He said the trip aimed to see church conditions where state regulation limits church functions and underground churches are growing.
Nokomis resident Lou Hickman reports about a dozen small birds including parakeets and doves found dead in recent days. He conducted a homemade autopsy and found D con rat poison in a bird’s crop, suggesting accidental exposure from improperly placed bait and urging safer storage to protect wildlife.

The Sarasota County Construction Association sponsors the expo in the Exhibition Hall from April 29 to May 2 with 75 local home industry exhibitors. Highlights include solar energy displays and the Miss Expo of 1976 beauty contest with a $100 prize. Door prizes such as a silver service will be awarded. admission is free.
The Venice Area Bicentennial Committee seeks funds for a July 4 fireworks display marking the 200th birthday. Residents are urged to contribute promptly to cover costs and ensure timely delivery. Checks are payable to the Venice Area Bicentennial Committee and mailed with the coupon to the listed address.
