Venice City blocks Pinebrook Ideal restrooms over unfinished complex

Optimists honor Slater with Law Week observance

The Optimist Club of Roberts Bay marks Respect for Law Week on May 17 proclaimed by Venice Mayor Harry Case. Five area students are named Good Citizens and Venice Police Officer of the Year Major Allen A. Slater is honored at a May 6 dinner at Captain's Restaurant. Slater, with the Venice Police Department since 1951, has led juvenile outreach and was elected governor of Venice lodge of the Loyal Order of Moose.

Russian trip offers look at church life in USSR

Rev. L Daniel Anderson spoke to about 30 ministers at the Southeast Covenant Conference in Bay Indies Mobile Estates. He described his nine day December tour with 50 Miami area church members and presented a 45 minute slide show to illustrate life in Russia. He said the trip aimed to see church conditions where state regulation limits church functions and underground churches are growing.

Birds dying in Nokomis area may be poisoned

Nokomis resident Lou Hickman reports about a dozen small birds including parakeets and doves found dead in recent days. He conducted a homemade autopsy and found D con rat poison in a bird’s crop, suggesting accidental exposure from improperly placed bait and urging safer storage to protect wildlife.
