Nail making a household job in colonial times
In colonial households nail making was a common quiet trade with families heating rods cutting blanks and hammering heads. Jeremiah Wilkinson of Rhode Island invented a nail cutting method in 1777 and Ezekial Reed of Massachusetts built the practical machine in 1786. Story notes early English progress by 1790 and explains modern nail production from heavy steel wire.
