Debt limit talks loom as X-date nears and costs rise
Acting assistant secretary Eric Van Nostrand warns that even a delay in raising the debt limit could lift borrowing costs and strain the labor market. Shai Akabas of the Bipartisan Policy Center cites a late X-date projection and calls the situation a risk to the United States’ financial standing. Democrats push for a clean raise while the White House and Biden invite four Congressional leaders to discuss the issue on May 9 amid a House push for spending cuts in exchange for a limit increase.
