Bases honor Confederate generals clash with renaming push
The debate over renaming U.S. military bases namesakes Confederate generals, many of whom were slaveholders or linked to racism, draws support from some lawmakers and critics from within the GOP. Figures such as Robert E. Lee, Braxton Bragg, John Bell Hood, A P Hill, George Pickett and John Brown Gordon are cited, while supporters argue history should be preserved. Analysts note regional attachment and evolving Southern identity complicate the issue.
