Medina seeks ballot on Medina County courthouse project restart
Medina City Council unanimously passed an ordinance to place a May 4 special election initiative on the ballot. The measure would let Medina residents vote on locating the Medina Municipal Court in the 1969 portion of the Medina County Courthouse at 93 Public Square, with a Feb. 3 filing deadline. The move comes after Issue 7, approved in November, bars city spending on the shared courthouse project for five years unless voters approve it. Mayor Dennis Hanwell said the legal team advised bringing the question to voters, while County Administrator Scott Miller said the city is unlikely to stay in the project. City officials say the shared amenities, like the sally port and centralized courts, are worth it, and renovating the current site is not cost effective. Attorney Pat Walker called a potential lawsuit a possibility. The mayor and several councilors believe another voter effort could succeed amid confusion over the initiative’s wording confirming a yes vote would bar city participation and a no vote would allow it.
