Malibu Fire Destroys Homes Sparks Evacuations in Malibu
A fast moving wind driven blaze named the Franklin Fire scorched Malibu, threatening more than 8,100 structures and prompting mass evacuations. Celebrities including Dick Van Dyke fled with animals as flames menaced Pepperdine University and the coast. Although authorities reported a minimal number of homes burned so far, containment was not achieved and winds eased only gradually as residents sheltered or fled with horses.
