American balloonists win Paris welcome after transatlantic flight
Abruzzo, Newman, and Anderson landed in a French wheatfield to a 4,000 strong crowd cheering with champagne and petals. The trio, celebrated as brave explorers, fell 60 miles short of Le Bourget while receiving honors from France and a White House invitation from President Carter. Their five day, 19 hour, eight minute voyage followed 18 failed attempts and prior fatalities.
