The Gastonia Gazette readers question the status of the Sheriff's Committee for Decent Literature and Movies. The group remains active, but members work more individually, urging store managers and theater operators to remove indecent material.
An American infantry company on a search and destroy mission near Dak To in the central highlands faced a deadly crossfire from North Vietnamese forces. Six Americans were killed and about 24 wounded as the fighting lasted seven hours, with two platoons isolated on a forested ridgeline before reinforcements arrived.
Early today B52 bombers each carrying 60 000 pounds of bombs blasted the area where airborne troops engaged North Vietnamese forces. Troopers sweeping the region reported skirmishes with small groups and found 75 bunkers, many with fresh blood evidence.
The Marine Corps released a partial list of the 22 Marines killed in the two-helicopter crash at the New River Marine Air Facility on Friday. Names include Col. Franklin L. Bell of Jacksonville and Capt. William B. Buchenen, among others, with several entries noting spouses and addresses in Jacksonville North Carolina.
Connecticut Democrat Thomas J. Dodd, censured for personal use of campaign funds, says he will serve out his term and seek vindication from voters in a bid for a third Senate term. He defended his record, promised to stay active, and noted the censure will not strip him of his duties or chairmanship.
Roy Trammell remains in Gaston County custody under a bond of under 50 dollars after an incident in Bessemer City described as disorderly conduct. The case is noted as one of the higher bonds in the county for the offense, with the full story on page 1B. Also, two more candidates filed for the Gaston County School Board with a July 1 deadline. There are currently no announced trough candidates to fill six seats. A Belmont truck driver is named the state road racing champion after recent competition in Winston-Salem. President Johnson reported after Glassboro talks with Soviet Premier Kosygin that no new agreements were reached while noting mutual desire for peace. He spoke at a Democratic fund raiser in Los Angeles as police clashed with antiwar demonstrators outside the hotel. Johnson teased California Democrats and quipped about Reagan’s electability as an actor.
