A station wagon carrying Savannah, Georgia occupants collided with an asphalt truck south of Hardeeville along U.S. 17. Ten died, including five from one family. the truck driver escaped injury. Victims ranged from 19 months to 38 years, with many children among the deceased. Rescue crews removed bodies about two hours after the crash as residents recounted the mangled wreckage and sounds of the collision.
