Water rate contract shields town from sudden hikes

The town adopts a new water contract to guard against abrupt rate increases after the 1954 drought. Mayor Beauchamp opposed local water plant construction unless terms with Gastonia are fair. Assault Penalty Issued In Court

Jillie Mae Barnwell Jackson admitted in Grstonia city court that she threw Pearl Dunham down during an argument on May 28. Pearl, 24, was found innocent. Reeves, 52, Winger Mill, pleaded guilty to assault on a female. Prayer for judgment continued. Odell Davis, 29, paid costs for drunkenness and assault.

Gastonite Elected State YMW Secretary at White Lake

Mrs. Mildred Rhyne, secretary in the Home Demonstration office, was elected secretary of the state YMW at the state conference in White Lake. Twelve local YMW members joined the trip. the conference began Thursday and ended Sunday morning. J.C. Barber accompanied the group as assistant farm agent.

Two Young Women Begin Internships at Gaston Memorial

Miss Julia Gregson of Sanford and Miss Anita Smith of Clinton have started a six month internship in the medical records department at Gaston Memorial Hospital. They are students at Lees McRae Junior College in Banner Elk.

School board acts on integration timing and memorials

The board kept the September 1 start for real work and chose not to name a successor to Leon Schneider. They read a letter thanking them for naming the new junior high and elementary school after W L P Grier, longtime superintendent. An inspection of Highland High School was scheduled for next Monday at 9 30 AM. They asked Waters to solicit bids to connect the high school and flow stadium with extra handrails, but recommended no memorials. the body will be taken home Wednesday at 10 AM.

Dallas Lions Club meets Tuesday evening with a program by Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Company personnel.
