Teachers From Gastonia Seek Summer Studies In numerous programs

In Gastonia a quarter of city teachers will study this summer. A total of 52 teachers are enrolled in colleges and universities for summertime study toward extended credentials while 32 teachers and principals recently completed extension courses at state colleges. The city list names many teachers and schools across Gastonia area.

4 H Dress Revue Set For Saturday

Edith Anne Siluford reports Gaston county 4 H Club members will stage the annual dress revue Saturday at 9 30 a m in the Agricultural Building Dallas with over 100 girls from about 20 clubs. The theme Dressing Around the Clock the 4 H Way features divisions breakfast time school time church time play time and party time. Junior and senior champions will be named with the senior to represent Gaston at the state revue in Raleigh and a trip to Camp Cherokee for the junior champion. The state winner goes to the National 4 H Club Congress in Chicago with possible national prize. Local Altrusa Club sponsors the program and supports 4 H work through clothing achievement efforts.

Delegates Named For North Carolina Boys State Visit

Gastonia will send four delegates to the American Legion Boys State at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Powell Nanney will lead the Gaston Post 24 group departing Sunday morning at 8 from Memorial Hall. Delegates are Andrey Melvin II, Larry Stacey, and Jimmy Alexander with Harold Stroupe substituting after securing a summer job. About 400 rising high school seniors from across the state will attend the 17th annual Boys State under co directors Roddey Ligon and Walter Horton with speakers including Thad Eure and J W Norton among others.

Donald Beaty of Belmont graduates from Duke University School of Divinity. Family attended baccalaureate and commencement with relatives from Belmont Durham and Steele Creek. Gaston Barracks to Meet Sunday at Memorial Hall

Gaston Barracks 671, Veterans of World War I, USA, will meet Sunday at Memorial Hall at 2 30 p.m. All members urged to attend. Gusty winds rain and an electrical storm forced cancellation of a major portion of an after dark exercise for the President. Only four of a scheduled dozen planes took off in a radar aided drill using a new mirror landing system. A pilot Marvin G McCanna of Halston Pa bailed out before the crash and was rescued by a helicopter from the Saratoga. Police identified him as Ray L Welch 30 of 2409 South York street. Detectives Brittain and Bolick arrested Welch on Franklin avenue about 10 pm Thursday for a preliminary hearing in Gastonia city court Monday.

A former Gaston man now of Baltimore Maryland never started a new garage business in Gastonia. Thieves cleaned him out before the door opened according to a report by family police. About $1000 worth of automatic automobile transmissions were taken from the 509 West Airline avenue building where Bill I Ransom had stored his equipment.

Girard Denies Luring Woman in Japanese Trial Fight

William Girard, a 21 year old U S Army private, denies Japanese charges that he enticed a scrap collector woman to her death asserting the fatal shooting was accidental. The case tests the U S Japanese status of forces agreement with Japan deciding custody and trial rights for servicemen off base.

Death Takes Mrs Abernethy in Stanley area

Mrs Carle Virginia Abernethy 80 of Stanley R-1 died Friday at 8 am after a three year illness. Curtis Cuthbertson bound over in Gastonia case

Curtis Cuthbertson a 57 year old black man was bound over to superior court on a felonious charge after a Friday city court incident involving Hugh Lee Ivester 23 with a pistol on May 17 in Gastonia. Bond set at 1000 and other local cases included speeding driving with expired license and small fines for stop sign and trespass violations.

Turney Named New City Manager in Graham

Bruce Turney, 31, Newton city manager, is hired to fill Graham post. Appointment effective June 24, by Mayor Myron A. Rhyne, succeeding Thomas Hobbs who resigned last October. Turney, a Gastonia native, attended the University of North Carolina.
