Speeding Dominate Local May Crime Record in Gastonia

A police summary by Assistant Chief E. E. Rankin shows 638 people were arrested or cited in Gastonia township during May. More than half of the offenses involved speeding, making it the leading crime category for the 31 day period.

Gethsemane Baptist Church hosts Sunday services at 11 with Rev Dayie Dunlap and Rev Rosebore Lomack of Cherryville as guest ministers. At 1 pm Rev S I Clement will preach. Bible School Sessions Set

Preparation Day for Vacation Bible School will be held Saturday at 4 p m at Lakeview Hap tis Mission in McAdenville. A parade will be held at 5 o'clock after which refreshments will be served. A week of Bible School sessions will be held from 5 to 7 36 p m beginning Monday June 10. School directors are Mrs Ruth Clemmer principal and Mrs Margaret Dellinger assistant.

The American Medical Association condemned amphetamine use among professional, college and high school athletes as a shocking and vicious practice. Dr. Herbert Berger of Staten Island warned that many addicts begin with the stimulant, calling for awareness of its dangers. Lutherans To Hold Vacation Church School

Mrs. Emma Craig Dies In Florida

Former Stanley resident Mrs. Emma Spargo Craig died in St Petersburg Florida on Monday where she had lived for years after leaving Stanley Funeral services were held there on Wednesday morning She is survived by one son Bob Presley of St Petersburg four sisters Leckie Whisnant Luther Sherrill of Stanley Clyde Hovis of Belmont and Will Morris of Gastonia three brothers Charlie and Raymond Spargo of Stanley and Lloyd Spargo of Gastonia Also Mrs Leckie Whisnant of Stanley accompanied by Mrs Will Morris Mrs Ralph Johnson and Lloyd Spargo of Gastonia left to attend the funeral

Jim Wallace Set for State VFW Commander Nomination

Jim Wallace a 32 year old Gastonia insurance man appears unopposed for state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars at the state encampment in Hendersonville. He has sought department commander since last year and now serves as senior vice commander as Gastonians travel to the encampment through Sunday.

Residents pay costs in Gastonia court cases

In Gastonia Municipal Court Thursday morning several defendants paid costs on speeding charges including William Burton Raby 25 of Crescent Jane Robey Bryant 29 Charles Neal 25 of Clover, Faye Page 16 Dallas Thelma Keene 27 of Hattiesburg and Mack Christenbury 31 Pinkney Station. Others paid costs for running stop signs or a red light namely Martha Jackson Aunsins 16 213 West Sixth Avenue James Washburn Jr. 26 Lake Lake and Clyde Marriner 28 Portsmouth Va Ernest Cox 26 104 West Ruby Street paid costs and received a suspended sentence for indecent exposure.

Carpenter Taken By Death at Mt. Beulah

Benjamin Herbert Carpenter 64, prominent Mt. Beulah farmer and carpenter, died Thursday at 1 30 a m at home. Survived by wife Buenah Biggerstaff, brother W Hugh Carpenter, sisters Mrs Henry S Paysour and Mrs John Hager. Active in Mt. Beulah Baptist Church, he led the choir. Revival Set At Macedonia Baptist Church
